WATERTOWN, Wisc. - North Central University baseball was in action on Friday at Maranatha Baptist to kick off a four game non-conference series. NCU won game one 3-2 and took game two 4-1.
The Rams got on the board early in game one with an RBI single from Brandon Scott to plate Cory Kukkola. An inning later NCU would go up 3-0 after an RBI single from Bob Donohoe brought in Justin Torres.
Jonathan Kutzke started on the mound for the Rams and threw five innings. His only blunder came off the bat of Cody Kuhl in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull Maranatha within one at 3-2. Kutzke would log five innings of two run ball with five strikeouts and no walks.
Junior Eli Valder earned the save as he threw in relief of Kutzke with two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Kutzke moves to 1-1 on the season. At the plate Tate Andrews led the Rams going 2-for-4 with one RBI. Taylor Justice added a 2-for-3 showing, scoring once.
In game two sophomore Blazsen Ferreira started on the mound for the Rams. MBU got on the board early in the bottom of the third as a groundout to shortstop Cory Kukkola brought Ryan Hempel to the plate.
The Rams bats would remain silent until the top of the fifth inning as four runs would score. Cory Kukkola doubled off the left field wall to plate Bryce Riege. With the infield in, Taylor Justice singled up the middle to plate another run for the Rams. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Tate Andrews scored Taylor Justice later in the inning. Josh Thompson executed a hit-and-run for the Rams to bring another run in.
In the top of the fifth NCU would add another after a fielders choice from Taylor Justice brought Bob Donohoe in to score.
Blazsen Ferreira threw outstanding on the mound for NCU. The sophomore from Hawaii logged a complete game, allowing only one run on seven hits with nine strikeouts and zero walks. Ferreira moves to 1-1 on the season.
The Rams will continue their road series with another doubleheader tomorrow against Maranatha Baptist with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (CDT).
