Rams Split Series With Jills

PLYMOUTH, Minn. - North Central University softball (7-12, 1-1 UMAC) opened the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) season on Tuesday afternoon with a series against Northland College Lumberjills (3-17, 1-3 UMAC) at the Plymouth Creek Dome. The Lumberjills took game one from the Rams in a six inning game, 11-1. The Rams would fight back to grab the win in game two, 5-2. The Rams totaled six runs and 12 hits on the day to give NCU their first win over Northland since 2013. North Central's win over Northland was the first UMAC win for the Rams since the 2015 season.

Game 1: Despite the final score, the Rams kept the game close through the first five innings of play. Northland scored two runs in both the first and second inning however, North Central scored in the bottom of the first after Ellee Laws (Odgen, Iowa/Odgen) singled up the right side to bring Amanda Roth (Appleton, Wis./Neenah) home for the score. Through the first two innings Northland lead 4-1. It wasn't until the top of the fifth when Northland scored again to extend the lead to 5-1. Northland got their bats swinging in the top of the sixth inning to score six runs to extend the lead to 11-1. After a scoreless bottom of the sixth for the Rams, Northland took the win ending the game after six innings due to the run-rule.

Game 2: Resiliency flowed through the veins of North Central as the Rams bounced back offensively and defensively in the second game of the day. The Rams got on the scoreboard first when Laws hit a screaming ball to center field for a triple which sent Kylee Bommersbach (Sartell, Minn./Sartell) run across home plate after getting on base from a bunt in which she outran the Northland putout attempt. Emily Loop (Phelan, Calif./Serrano) kept the momentum going hitting a single through the left side to send Laws home for the 2-0 lead. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning with all three of Northland's outs in the top of the second come from three Emma Bushey (Three Lakes, Wis./Three Lakes) strikeouts. In the third, both teams added one run to their scoreline. For the Rams, déjà vu hit when Loop singled and Laws scored after Laws got on base from a triple. North Central gave up a run in the top of the fourth to bring the game to 3-2 going into the fifth inning where the Rams capitalized on the Jills errors resulting in two Rams runs. A scoreless sixth and seventh inning by the Lumberjills helped the Rams earn their first UMAC win of the season.

Up Next: The Rams will host Martin Luther College Knights on Friday, April 13 in a UMAC doubleheader. The games will be played at the Plymouth Creek Dome with games starting at 2 p.m.
