MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- After a year of learning and struggle North Central University Women's Basketball is ready to take on the challenge of competing for a national championship. Thursday afternoon the Rams will begin that quest in the opening round of the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament hosted by Ohio Christian University (Circleville, Ohio.).
The Rams (10-17) featured just two seniors on their roster in 2012-13 but found a way to compete and claw their way to a regional tournament championship and a berth in the 2013 NCCAA National Tournament. After losing key players to injury and having one of their seniors spend time overseas doing student teaching for most of the winter, it was a testament to the team's strength and focus to earn their spot in the NCCAA National Tournament.
NCU got a week of practice and recovery time to enjoy their accomplishment after winning their sixth region title in seven season on February 23, with a 68-64 victory over Trinity Bible College (Ellendale, N.D.). But their reward for upsetting the regional top seed Lions was getting a tough test in the opening round of the national tournament.
Thursday the Rams will open the tournament as the eighth seed and take on top national seed Maranatha Baptist Bible College (Watertown, Wis.) at 2 p.m. The Crusaders (21-6) are the midwest region champion.
With an upset of top seed Maranatha, the Rams would play at 6 p.m. Friday evening against the winner of fourth seed Trinity Baptist College (Jacksonville, Fla.) and fifth seed Ohio Christian University (Circleville, Ohio). With a loss NCU would take on the loser of the TBC and OCU first round game at 2 p.m. on Friday.
