Box Score ASHLAND, Wis.-- Despite both teams being eliminated from contention from the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference post-season tournament, North Central University Women's Basketball knew ending the regular season with a road win at Northland College would be a tough task. But they were up to the task and despite being down by double figures at halftime, NCU rallied back to earn a victory over the Lumberjills on Saturday night.
North Central (8-17, 4-10) wrapped up their first year in the Upper Midweast Athletic Conference (UMAC) with a road trip to Northland College (Ashland, Wis.) on Saturday afternoon. The two teams battled through most of the first half in a one or two possession game before a late second half push gave the Lumberjills a 31-21 at halftime.
North Central was able to slowly trim the lead down to a single point two times before senior Elisabeth Trickey (Waseca, Minn./Waseca) got a steal which led to junior Jorie Grenell (Lakeville, Minn./Spring Lake Park) connecting on a jumper at 6:15 of the second half. That gave NCU their first lead of the game since 18:45 of the first half. The 'Jills took the lead back briefly on their next possession but an offensive rebound and lay-up from freshman Jamie High (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) with 5:51 left gave NCU an edge they would not give away for the rest of the game.
The Rams went on a 19-4 run over the next 5:30 to take control of the game and earn an eventual 66-58 victory over Northland College. The Rams completed their first year in UMAC action with a sixth place finish in the league standings.
Jamie High closed the regular season schedule of her freshman season by scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds along with 3 blocked shots for her second consecutive double-double. Elisabeth Trickey added 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists in the final regular season game of her NCU career.
Jorie Grenell scored 13 points along with 3 steals. Junior Emily Aleckson (Braham, Minn./Cambridge Christian) scored 10 points.
The Rams will be back in action in the National Christian College Athletic Association Regional Tournament next weekend. NCU is the tournament host and has earned the second seed. They will take on Providence College (Otterburne, Manitoba) at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 22. The winner of the NCCAA regional tournament will receive an automatic berth in the NCCAA National Championship on March 7-9.
