Rams Compete in Pair of Weekend Road Triangular Matches

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- North Central Volleyball went south for the weekend for a pair of road triangular matches. Friday night the Rams played a pair at Mount Mary University before another twin bill at Beloit College on Saturday afternoon.

Friday afternoon North Central started off the triangular hosted by Mount Mary University (Milwaukee, Wis.) by taking on Finlandia University (Hancock, Mich.). The Rams fell behind 2-0 in the first two sets before rallying back to force a fifth and deciding frame. North Central committed eight attack errors in the final set and fell 15-6 to the Lions. Two Rams reached double figure kills with freshmen Ashley Kelzer (Mayer, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) and Sarah Hundeby (Elbow, Saskatchewan/Caronport) posting 11 and 10 respectively. Junior Whitney Reames (Vassar, Mich./Vassar) recorded a team-high 27 digs with Hundeby adding 23 digs. Sophomore Elissa Pheneger (Roseville, Minn./Roseville) posted a match-high 34 assists.

The second match on Friday had the Rams up against the host Blue Angels. NCU jumped on the home team 25-8 in the first set and North Central never looked back with 25-18 and 25-19 wins in the second and third stanzas to take a 3-0 sweep in the match. Sarah Hundeby led the Rams attack with 9 kills and 8 digs. Junior Karlee Cox (Des Moines, Iowa/Saydel) added 7 kills with Elissa Pheneger posted 33 assists along with 8 digs. Whitney Reames equaled a match high with 11 digs and freshman Maddie Saice (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) posted 10 digs, 6 service aces and 5 kills to equal a match high 11 total points in the win.

Saturday started brightly as North Central opened their triangular match at Beloit College (Beloit, Wis.) by winning their first set over Grinnell College (Grinnell, Iowa) 25-21. But the Pioneers rebounded to take the next three and send the Rams to a 3-1 loss. Sarah Hundeby equaled a team high in both kills and digs with 7 and 11 respectively. Sophomore Sarah Mattes (Rice Lake, Wis./UW-Barron County) also put down 7 kills while Whitney Reames added 11 digs. Elissa Pheneger had 25 assists.

The weekend concluded with the Rams taking on the host Beloit Bucs. North Central battled in the first set but fell 25-17 and never recovered on the way to a 3-0 loss. The Rams attack never got going, posting a negative attack percentage and scoring just 21 points. Ashley Kelzer led the offense with 5 kills and an ace to record almost a third of the Rams points. Elissa Pheneger posted 14 assists and a equaled a team best 6 digs.

North Central will be back in action in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference this weekend. Friday the Rams will travel to Crown College (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Storm. Saturday North Central takes on the University of Minnesota-Morris (Morris, Minn.) at 6 p.m. in Morris.
