Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- In a match up with their friendly rival from the north, North Central needed to be diverse on offense and clean the glass. The Rams accomplished both of those items with five players posting double-figures and earning a double-figure advantage on the glass to pull away from Trinity Bible College for an 83-64 win at home on Saturday.
North Central (2-6, 0-0 UMAC) and Trinity Bible College met up on Saturday and for most of the first half it looked like another down to the wire classic was on tap. The Lions led for brief periods before North Central closed on a 13-4 run that gave them a 42-29 cushion at the half. NCU shot .545 (18-33) and freshman Joel Cline (Green Bay, Wis/Southwest) led all scores with 11 points in the first 20 minutes.
Out of the break the Rams gathered momentum and opened by scoring the first seven of the half to push the lead to 20 points. But the Lions stayed alive with just enough three point shooting and after the Rams moved their lead to as many as 22 with 11:46 left, Trinity rallied to make it interesting down the stretch.
Trinity got within eight with around 6 minutes left but a key drive and dish by freshman Travis Voigt (Green Bay, Wis./N.E.W. Lutheran) to fellow freshman Joel Cline pushed the lead back to 10 and it was was never smaller than that margin the rest of the way.
In a tight game the Rams game up with with key shots and converted 13 of 14 free throws in the final three minutes to pull away. The Lions got almost half their scoring from three point shots but made just .333 (11-33) and North Central made the best of that by dominating the glass 51-37.
Junior Luke Chafin (Dayton, Ohio/Troy Christian) recorded one of two NCU double-doubles with a team high 14 points and 11 boards. Joel Cline also posted 14 points along with 5 boards. Senior Jordan Harrell (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored 13 and pulled down a game high 12 boards. Junior Josh High (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) also scored 10 points and made a difference with 5 steals.
Point guard play was also key for the Rams as starter, junior Cody Martin (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) posted 9 points with 7 assists and no turnovers in 27 minutes. Travis Voigt continues to be effective as the Rams sixth man and was the fifth NCU player to reach double digits with 12 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes. Junior Clarke Mossman (Conrad, Iowa/Marshalltown) added 9 points and 6 boards.
North Central will be off until next Friday when they have a shot at securing the top seed for the NCCAA Regional tournament in February. With a win over Faith Baptist Bible College (Ankeny, Iowa) at home in six days, they would take that honor. NCU is scheduled to tip-off versus Faith Baptist at 7:30 p.m.
