Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn.-- North Central traveled to The University of Northwestern on Tuesday night looking to keep a two game Upper Midwest Athletic Confernce win streak alive. But the Eagles nailed a three pointer on the first posession of the game and again less than a minute later to take control of the game. NCU made a strong surge late in the game but it came up short in a 77-62 loss.
North Central (9-9, 2-6) fell behind 22-8 over the first 10 minutes of the game and struggled to get closer than that for final 30 minutes. A steal and assist from senior Chauncee Hollingsworth (St. Louis, Mo./Soldan International) on a three pointer from junior Josh High (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) cut the lead to 24-18 with 8:07 in the half. After a stop on the defensive end High just missed another three pointer and the Eagles scored the next eight points and establish control of the game. UNW led 41-24 at the break.
In the second half the Rams would find themselves down 23 with just less than 11 minute remaining in the game before they made a strong run to get back in the game. Sophomore Luke Chafin (Dayton, Ohio/Troy Christian) got a lay up with 3:14 left that made it 69-58 and then forced a miss from the Eagles on the defensive end. However, the hosts ran down the long rebound and then hit a dagger three pointer that essentially ended the Rams chances.
NCU scored to make it 72-60 with 2:04 left but a final Northwestern three pointer officially ended the Rams chances at a miracle comeback. The Eagles would get a few stops and hold on for the win.
Northwestern was 11-23 (.478) from the three point line while NCU was just 2-17 on the evening.
Senior Bryce Burkman (Winsted, Minn./Maple Grove) led NCU with 15 points and 4 rebounds. Luke Chafin added 12 points and a team high 7 rebounds. Freshman Isaiah Rustad (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) also added 12 points with 6 rebounds.
The Rams get back to work on Friday when they travel to The University of Minnesota-Morris (Morris, Minn.). NCU takes on the Cougars at 7:30 p.m.
