Storm Take Season Series from NCU

| Box Score 2

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- North Central Softball dropped both parts of their Saturday double header with Crown College at East Phillips Park. The Rams committed seven errors in the two games and allowed ten unearned runs while posting just 12 of their own hits in the losses.

Game one saw North Central start quickly and jump out 3-1 after four innings. NCU got two in the first when sophmore Meryn Garvey (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) smacked a two-out triple that drove in a pair and started the scoring. After Crown got a run in the top of the third, NCU got one back when senior Rachael Thearin (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) doubled with two outs to drive in a run. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth before Crown made their decisive scoring rally.

The Storm posted nine runs in the top of the fifth, six unearned, on eight hits. North Central was not able to rally and Crown got two more in the sixth to claim the 12-3 final scoreline. Garvey and Thearin were each 1-3 with a triple and a double respectively. Garvey also pitched all six innings allowing three earned runs on 14 hits.

Game two was a closer battle but ended with the same result. North Central fell behind 11-0 after 3.5 innings before getting back in the game in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Keishia Carpentier (Coon Rapids, Minn./Anoka-Ramsey CC) led off with a walk and stole second with one out. Sophomore Megan Myers (Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolf) then reached on an error and Carpentier was able to score on the play.

Myers then moved up on an error that was part of a fielders choice from Rachael Thearin. Meryn Garvey then walked to load the bases with one out. Sophomore Jamie High (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo), senior Paisley Bennett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) and senior Rachel Powell (Duncansville, Pa./Holidaysburg) all walked in consecutive plate appearances to score Myers, Thearin and Garvey. After a flyout Keishia Carpentier came back to the plate and reached for the second time in the inning, this time with a 2 RBI single that scored Bennett and High to get NCU within 11-6 after four.

Crown made it 12-6 in the top of the fifth before NCU got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Megan Myers doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a ground out from Rachael Thearin. Meryn Garvey then singled to right to score Myers and North Central was within 12-7 through five full innings.

Both teams were scoreless in the sixth and the Rams held Crown in the seventh to keep the difference five before their final at bat in the bottom of the frame. Paisley Bennett reached with a one-out walk and moved to second when Rachel Powell reached on an error. Freshman Danielle Miho then singled to right to score Bennett and it looked like the Rams had a rally going. But a flyout to center allowed the Storm to pinch off the runner who was caught off first base to end the game.

Keishia Carpentier was 2-4 with two RBI, two stolen bases and a walk. Megan Myers was 1-4 with a double and two runs scored. Meryn Garvey was 1-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

The Rams will be back in action on Tuesday when they host The University of Northwestern (St. Paul, Minn.). The Rams and Eagles are scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch at East Phillips Park.
