MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The North Central Women's Soccer team earned its first victory of the 2014 season with a 2-0 win over the visiting Blue Angels of Mt. Mary University.
The Rams came out of the gate extremely aggressive, peppering the opposing goalkeeper with a barrage of shots. The home side broke through in the 10th minute when a shot from senior captain, Jen Sargent (Milwaukee, Wis. / Heritage Christian) found the back of the net after taking a deflection off a defender.
The Rams continued to dominate the play, tallying 19 shots in the first half, but were unable to finish with more than a one-goal lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Rams defense continued to shut down the Mt. Mary (Milwaukee, Wis.) attack, while tallying another 18 shots. Then in the 81st minute, a great run from freshman midfielder, Brianna Ritter (Austin, Minn. / Austin) created a chance for fellow freshman, Rebekah Hammond (Cloquet, Minn. / Cloquet). Hammond doubled the Ram's lead with a composed finish in front of goal. The Rams had a few more chances in the last few minutes but the score line finished 2-0 in favor of the home team.
The Women's team looks to build on their victory next Friday, as they open up conference play against the College of St. Scholastica. Kickoff is set for 2:00 P.M. in Coon, Rapids followed by the Men's game at 4:00 P.M.
