Box Score 2 Minneapolis, Minn.-- The North Central University volleyball team finished an exciting weekend of action with a dramatic five set victory over Emmaus Bible College on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams (3-6, 0-0) used 64 kills and a kill percentage of .173 to overcome a tough test from the Eagles (Dubuque, Iowa).
North Central rallied from a 14-12 defecit in the fifth set as the birthday girl, Amanda Mogen (Watford City, N.D. / Watford City) had a kill and a pair of aces to give the Rams a 15-14 lead. After a North Central service error, the Rams scored on a kill by freshman McKenzie Dufault (Hudson, Wis. / New Life Academy) to take a 16-15 lead. NCU then forced an attacking error from the Eagles (1-3) to win the set 17-15.
NCU was led by Mogen who recorded 15 kills, four service aces, and 20 digs in the victory. Sophomore Elissa Pheneger (Roseville, Minn / Concordia Academy) had a career day with 54 assists and 14 digs in the match.
The Rams frontline and team serves proved to be too much for the Eagles to handle as freshman Ashley Kelzer (Mayer, Minn. / Watertown-Mayer) recorded a team-high 16 kills on 43 total attacks. Dufault had 10 kills in the win while also recording a game-high five aces. Sophomore Sarah Mattes (Rice Lake, Wis. / UW-Barron County) added eight kills of her own and contributed four of the Rams 18 service aces in the victory.
In morning action, North Central lost to Providence University College (Manitoba, Canada) by a score of 3-0.
The Rams were led by junior Karlee Cox (Des Moines, Iowa / Saydel) who had five kills and a team-high kill percentage of .333. Sophomore Karlee Huber (Rapid City, S.D. / Dakota Wesleyan Univ.) led North Central with eight kills in the match, while also recording seven digs.
Pheneger, had 14 assists in the contest with a team-high nine digs.
The Pilots (4-3) overpowered the Rams with 37 kills on 87 attempts. But North Central played the final set of the match tough, losing 25-19. NCU had 19 kills and 22 errors on 83 total attacks (-.036) in the defeat.
North Central returns to action on September 19th as they play host to Crown College (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) at 7:00p.m. in Minneapolis. The contest will mark the season opener for conference play as the Rams compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
