Rams Earn Hard Fought Draw with Northwestern

Box Score

MINNEAPOLIS-- Men's Soccer saw out a satisfying result at home on Wednesday night despite not earning a victory. The Rams finished out a 1-1, double overtime draw against the University of Northwestern to end a seven game skid against the Eagles.

North Central had previously loss all it's matches against Northwestern since the Rams joined the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference in 2012. During that stretch UNW outscored NCU 20-1 over seven games including a 2-0 loss to the Eagles at Reynolds Field back on September 15 of this season.

On Wednesday afternoon the teams played an even match over two full overtimes to earn a draw in conference play. The Eagles lone goal came in the 26th minute when Joshua Fryc lofted a ball into the Rams penalty area from about 50 yards out and Rams goal keeper Andrew Eliason (Milan, Mich./Milan) misjudged the ball and it went in the net just over his head. It would remain 1-0 at the interval.

In the second half Eliason would redeem himself with several key saves and the Rams defense withstood the test throughout the rest of the game. North Central's lone goal would also come from it's defense as junior David Afolabi (Champlin Park, Minn./Itasca Community College) was able to roam forward on the wing and received a great pass from freshman Gabe Dawson (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Battlefield) on the ground that slotted home across the goal to the far post going left to right to tie the match in the 57th minute.

With less than five minutes left it appeared that Dawson would net the potential game winner for the Rams but an outstanding save from the Eagles keeper preserved the draw and the teams would play scoreless through a pair of 10 minute over time periods.

Andrew Eliason saved 10 of the 11 shots he faced in earning the draw.

The Rams will be back in action on Saturday when they host Martin Luther College (New Ulm, Minn.) That UMAC contest is scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. kickoff in Minneapolis.
