Women's Hoops Drops Heartbreaker to Cougars

Box Score

MINNEAPOLIS-- Women's Basketball led for most of the night but the Rams ran out of gas and the University of Minnesota-Morris hit a big shot when it matter most to take the victory. The Cougars hit a three pointer with ten seconds left and held on defense to defeat North Central 59-58 at home on Friday.

North Central (2-5, 0-2 UMAC) led at halftime by two and extended their advantage to nine after three quarters but went scoreless the final 2:30 of the game and that proved to be their undoing. In a back and forth game, the Rams never trailed by more than two points, just at the end of the first quarter, and were in position to get their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference win of the year with a 58-51 lead and just 2:35 left to play.

However, North Central committed three fouls and three turnovers in the final scoreless stretch that allowed the Cougars a chance to stay alive and eventually it cost the Rams the game. After a missed Rams jumper the Cougars raced back on offense and hit a three pointer with 10.7 seconds left that proved to be the game winner. The Rams were unable to get a good shot off in the final moments and Morris got the win.

Sophomore Lizzy Swanson (Askov, Minn./East Central) dropped a game high 27 points on 5-6 from the three point area along with 6 rebounds. Sophomore Marissa Kari (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) added 19 points with 8 rebounds.

The Rams will look to recover quickly from their tough loss on Friday as they get back to action on Saturday evening. NCU hosts Crown College (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) in UMAC action at 5 p.m.
