Box Score Minneapolis, Minn.-- Shelby Norman and Lizzy Swanson led the North Central University women's basketball team to a thrilling overtime win Saturday night over Northland College.
The Rams knew they were in for a battle as they hosted a scrappy Lumberjills team from Northland College (Ashland, Wi.). The Jills came out of the gates strong and held a 15-10 lead mid way through the first half. A Shelby Norman (Winsted, Minn./ Watertown-Mayer) made three pointer with nine minutes to go in the half sparked a 10-0 run and the Rams carried the momentum into the break with a 37-28 lead.
North Central came out of the half strong and pushed the lead all the way to 16 with under nine minutes to go. From that point on, the Jills used swarming defense to fight all the way back and eventually take the lead 65-64 at the 1:26 mark.
The Rams found themselves down two with half a minute to go when freshman Lizzy Swanson (Askov, Minn./ East Central) was fouled and confidently stepped up to the line and knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game. The Rams would get a stop to send the game into overtime.
North Central opened up overtime with a stop on defense which led to a lay in on the other end. Norman and Swanson would score 10 out of the Rams 14 points in overtime in route to a 81-71 win.
Junior Jamie High (Buffalo, Minn./ Buffalo) contributed her usual double double as she scored 10 points and grabbed 13 boards. Freshman Marissa Kari (Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) chipped in with 9 points and 4 rebounds. Sophomore Tania Rosener (Rodney, Iowa / Homeschool) contributed 7 points and 5 boards in 38 minutes of action.
The Rams continue Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play next Friday night as they play host to Crown College (St. Bonifacius, Minn). Tip is set for 5:30p.m.
