Rams Knocked off by Saints in Home Opener

Box Score

COON RAPIDS, Minn.-- The home opener for Rams Baseball wrapped on Friday afternoon with North Central on the short end of a lopsided scoreline. NCU only posted two hits and The College of St. Scholastica defeated the Rams 15-0.

North Central (2-3, 0-1 UMAC) played a relatively clean game but St. Scholastica (Duluth, Minn.) proved too much for the Rams to handle both at the plate and on the hill. The Saints jumped on top 4-0 in the first inning and added another run in the second to lead 5-0 after two innings.

It looked like the Rams had a chance to get on the score board in the bottom of the second after junior David Babcock (Fresno, Calif./Buchanan) and sophomore Taylor Madrinich (West Bend, Wis./West Bend) each singled to lead off the inning. But the Saints turned a ground ball double-play and effectively ended the Rams threat.

Both teams were scoreless in the third inning before St. Scholastica completely took over the game by posting eight earned runs on six hits in their part of the fourth inning to make it 13-0. The Rams went down in order in the bottom of the frame before CSS added another pair of runs in the fifth to secure the final score line.

Babcock and Madrinich were the only Rams to record a hit in the loss. Bacock also reached with a walk in the seventh as the only other base runner the Rams recorded in the game.

North Central and St. Scholastica will continue their three game series that represents the opening of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference schedule for both teams on Saturday. The double-header is scheduled for a Noon first pitch at Wintercrest Park.
