Box Score 2 COON RAPIDS, Minn.-- North Central dropped both games of their double-header with The College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon. The Saints offense proved too much for the Rams as the vistors defeated North Central 11-0 and 18-2 at Winter Crest Park.
North Central (2-5, 0-3 UMAC) fell behind on Saturday in much the same form as they did on Friday night. The Rams trailed 5-0 after three innings in both contest but North Central avoided allowing eight runs in the fourth frame on Saturday. St. Scholastica posted a pair in the fourth, and four in the fifth to complete the scoring.
North Central did improve at the plate with five hits but left four of those runners on board with the other being take care of by an inning ending double-play. Freshman Jordan Fair (Boyne City, Mich./Boyne City) was 2-3 in the lead off spot for the Rams while Bruno Ricena (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) was 1-1 with a walk. Junior David Babcock (Fresno, Calif./Buchanan) took the loss on the mound but allowed just three earned runs off 11 Saints hits with 5 strikeouts to just 1 walk. The Rams committed seven errors in the loss.
Game two saw a parade of walks and errors for North Central blow the game open in the first frame. The Saints posted 10 runs, 7 earned, off 4 hits, 5 walks and 2 errors. NCU struck out swinging in their part of the first and CSS posted another 3 runs in the second and the score was 13-0 after three full innings.
St. Scholastica posted another three runs in the top of the fourth inning, two of which were unearned and with two outs recorded. But the Rams responded with one of just two scoring rallies in the weekend series for North Central. Junior Cody Van Sickle (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) recorded a two out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. David Babcock then mashed a single down the right field line that scored Van Sickle to get the Rams on the board for the first time in the series. The Rams got another single to put runners at first and second but the could not get anothe run across and teams when through five full innings at a 16-1 score line.
In the sixth the Rams got another run back when a lead off infield single from sophomore Caleb Wyre (Scottsbluff, Neb./Gering) and a walk from Cody Van Sickle gave the the Rams two on with no outs. David Babcock advanced the runners with a flyout to right and a single from Taylor Madrinich (West Bend, Wis./West Bend) eventually drove in Wyre from second. A line out, throw out double-play ended teh threat for NCU. St. Scholastica would get two more in the seventh to reach the final 18-2 scoreline.
David Bacock was 1-2 with an RBI while Taylor Madrinich was 2-3 with an RBI.
The Rams will be back in action in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action on Tuesday. North Central travels to St. Paul to take on The University of Northwestern (St. Paul, Minn.) in a 7 p.m., single nine inning game at Reynolds Field.
