Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- Rams Softball was unable to piece together enough plays in a pair of weekend double-headers to get in the win column. Friday North Central dropped both games to Martin Luther College before losing a pair on Saturday to Bethany Lutheran College.
Game one on Friday saw the Rams fall 10-1 to Martin Luther College. NCU fell behind 5-1 through three innings before they were able to plate their only run. Freshman Amanda Roth (Neenah, Wis/Neenah) led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left and moved up to third on a ground out. Freshman Kylee Bommersbach (Sartell, Minn./Sartell) then singled to left center to drive in Roth.
Martin Luther would add two more in the fifth and another three in the sixth to reach the final 10-1 count. Amanda Roth was 2-3 in the game while Kylee Bommersbach and junior Megan Myers (Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolf) each recorded a single.
In game two against MLC, North Central was within 4-1 through three innings before Knights plated three in the top of the fourth. NCU was able to add another run in the bottom of the fifth but the Knights answered with another in the sixth and iced it with 4 more in the final frame.
Megan Myers was 2-3 with a walk while freshman Abbey Erzberger (Brookfield, Wis./Heritage Christian) was 1-4 with a double. Kylee Bommersbach was 1-3 with an RBI.
Saturday the Rams hosted their annual parents day cookout but they could not get any offense going in game one against Bethany Lutheran College. NCU trailed 3-1 after two innings but the Vikings blew the game open with 8 runs in the third and it was never in doubt the rest of the way in a 17-3 loss. NCU did get a pair back in the fourth when sophomore Holly Pieper (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) posted an RBI single and freshman Samantha Bergum (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) recorded an RBI sac bunt. But NCU only got three hits in the game and allowed 14 earned runs on 8 hits including a grand slam home run.
In game two against the Vikings, the Rams showed resolve but fell 10-9 after allowing seven unearned runs. North Central took a 4-3 lead after big first at bat. Abbey Erzberger led off with a walk and then stole second. Megan Myers then walked to give the Rams two on and no outs. After a flyball out, Erzberger then stole third and Myers moved on the throw. With two outs Holly Pieper walked to load the bases for Samantha Bergum who singled through the right side to drive in Myers and Erzberger and put Pieper on third. Freshman Mary Nelson (Milwaukee, Wis./Grace Christian) was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Freshman Danelle Paegler (Warren, Minn./Warren-Alvarado-Oslo) and sophomore Amanda Johnson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) each drew RBI walks to complete the rally.
The Vikings got three more in the second but NCU covered that move with four more of their own. With one out Amanda Roth reached on an error, stole second and reached third on another error. Kylee Bommersbach then posted an RBI single and stole second. Holly Pieper then reached on a walk and both players moved up on a wild pitch. Samantha Bergum loaded the bases with a walk and Mary Nelson then recorded an RBI walk of her own. After a pitching change Danelle Paegler singled up the middle to score two more runs and give NCU a 8-6 lead through two innings.
Bethany Lutheran added another run in the third and it was 8-7 through three innings. The Vikings then got a pair of unearned runs in the fourth to take a 9-8 lead after four innings. North Central was able to tie it back up in the fifth when Amanda Johnson posted a two-out, RBI single and it was 9-9 through five innings.
The Vikings were able to post a sac fly in the sixth to take a 10-9 lead through six. NCU held BLC scoreless in the seventh but after two four pitch strikeouts the Rams got the tying run aboard. However another strikeout finalized the win for Bethany Lutheran.
Danelle Paegler was 2-3 with a walk and 2 RBI. Samantha Bergum was 1-2 with a walk and 2 RBI/. Amanda Roth was 1-4 with 3 stolen bases while Kylee Bommersbach was 1-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
