Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- North Central dropped both parts of a split-double header at home on Tuesday afternoon. On a day that included, snow, rain and bouts of sun and gusty winds the Rams fell 16-0 to The College of St. Scholastica in 5 innings before losing to Northland College 12-6.
Tuesday's games were part of a conference split double-header hosted by North Central. East Phillips hosted a trio of games including two featuring the Rams. Despite being the host, North Central was the road team in the scorebook. Game one for NCU started out rough and never improved. The Rams went down in order in the first and the Saints pounced with a grand slam to take an 11-0 lead after an inning. North Central stranded a runner in the second and CSS added another grand slam to lead 15-0 through two. The Rams committed four errors and recorded just two base runners in the defeat.
Game two started out much better for North Central. After Northland jumped in front 1-0 after one inning, North Central grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning. After a pair of walks, a sacrifice groundout and a wild pitch gave NCU runners at first and third with one out, fresman Mary Nelson (Milwaukee, Wis./Grace Christian) singled down the left field line to drive in a run. Freshman Laura Grandstrand (Karlstad, Minn./Heritage) then grounded out to drive in another run and make it 2-1 through two innings.
Unfortunately for the Rams the lead was short-lived as the Jills posted four unearned runs as part of a six-run inning in the third that gave them control 7-2 through three. The Rams would leave four runners on over their next two at bats and Northland added another run to lead 8-2 through four innings.
Northland added another four runs in the fifth to make it 12-2 after 4.5 innings. NCU responded in their part of the fifth to keep the game alive. Freshman Amanda Roth (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) smacked a lead-off double to left center and junior Megan Myers (Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolf) drove her in with a double of her own. A flyout to right moved Myers to third and freshmen Samantha Bergum (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and Mary Nelson each walked to load the bases with one out. An error on a pitch out allowed Myers to score and moved Bergum and Nelson up a base. Sophomore Amanda Johnson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) drew a two-out walk to reload the bases and then freshman Abbey Erzberger (Brookfield, Wis./Heritage Christian) then drew an RBI walk to make it 12-5 through five innings.
North Central retired Northland in order in the sixth and got their offense started again in the bottom of the frame. Amanda Roth led off with a bunt single and moved up on a sacrifice ground out. Roth then moved up on a wild pitch and scored when Holly Pieper singled up the middle with one out. Pieper was able to move to second on a wild pitch and an error by the catcher on the play put her at third. Mary Nelson drew a two-out walk and it looked like NCU might have the momentum to cut further into the lead. However a strikeout ended the frame and the Rams trailed 12-6 after six.
The Rams made a few good plays on defense and kept Northland off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. But they struckout in order in their final at bat to complete the loss.
Amanda Roth was 3-4 with a double and two bunt singles. Megan Myers was 1-1 with a double and a walk. Amanda Johnson was 1-2 with a pair of walks and Mary Nelson was 1-1 with two walks.
North Central will wrap-up conference play on Saturday when they host The College of St. Scholastica. The double-header is set for a 1 p.m. start at East Phillips Park.
