Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- Softball wrapped up their season on a great note, sweeping a double-header against Maranatha Baptist University on Wednesday afternoon in East Phillips Park. North Central took game one 10-5 before rallying to win 7-6 in game two.
In game one the Rams built an early lead and took care of business down the stretch to defeat Maranath Baptist (Watertown, Wis.). Freshman Amanda Roth (Neenah, Wis.) began another standout day with an RBI triple in her first at-bat of the game and the Rams led 1-0 through an inning. The Sabercats tied things up in the top of the second before the Rams took control.
Junior Jamie High (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) got the rally going with an RBI double to center field. Then junior Megan Myers (Cannon Falls, Minn./Randolf) crushed a three run homer to straight away center field to make it 5-1 through two innings.
Roth stepped back in the pitching circle and sent MBU down scoreless in the third before the Rams got more offense in their part of the frame. Jamie High notched her second double of the game to drive in a pair and NCU led 7-1 after three.
Maranatha was scoreless in the fourth and the Rams pushed the difference further in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Kylee Bommersbach (Sartell, Minn./Sartell) grounded out to short but Amanda Roth was able to advance to third and scored on the throw from deep in the hole. North Central led 8-1 after four.
The Sabercats got a pair in the fifth and the Rams did not plate a run for the only inning in the game and it was 8-3 after five. Roth worked around two-out single in the sixth before doing more work at the plate in her next at-bat. Megan Myers led off with a single and Roth then crushed a home run to left center to make it 10-3 through six.
MBU got a pair in the top of the seventh but their rally was not enough to overcome a great effort by the Rams. North Central mashed 14 hits and did not commit an error in the field. Amanda Roth was just a double short of hitting for the cycle going 3-3 with a single, triple and home run along with 3 RBI, 2 stolen bases and a walk. Megan Myers was 3-4 with a home run and 3 RBI. Jamie High was 3-3 with 2 doubles.
In game two the Rams built an early advantage only to watch the Sabercats rally and take a late lead. NCU would get a key response from the top and bottom of their order to win in their final at-bat. North Central took a 1-0 lead in the first when an infield single by sophomore Holly Pieper (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) drove in a run.
The Rams lead grew in the second when Megan Myers doubled with two outs to drive in a pair of runs. Amanda Roth followed with a double of her own to drive in two more. North Central led 5-0 after two innings.
Maranatha began their rally in the third. They got three in the top of the frame and the Rams went down scoreless in the bottom of the inning and it was 5-3 after three.
MBU kept the pressure on with three more runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. The visitors would hold the Rams scoreless in the fifth and the Rams trailed heading into the sixth. Amanda Roth got a strikeout and made a great play to grab a line shot back through circle to keep the difference 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Amanda Johnson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) got on base via fielders choice and with one out freshman Samantha Bergum (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) walked to give NCU runners at first and second. Danelle Pageler (Warren, Minn./Warren-Alvarado-Oslo) then reached on another fielders choice but an error allowed Johnson to be safe at third with still just one out. Jamie High then singled up the middle to drive in the tying run. NCU could not get anything further in the frame and headed to the seventh needing to make a few more plays.
Once again, Amanda Roth was a stead force in the circle with a strikeout for the first out and another great play on a liner back to the circle to retire the side. In their final at-bat the Rams would need the bottom of their order to produce a game winning plate appearance for the top of the line up and they game through.
Danelle Paegler was hit by a pitch with one out but by reaching base it allowed the Rams to get the top of their order up in the seventh. Jamie High would ground into a fielders choice that retired Paegler but freshman Abbey Erzberger (Brookfield, Wis./Heritage Christian) notched a single through the middle allowing Megan Myers a chance to drive in the winning run in what would likely be the final plate appearance of her NCU career. Myers chopped a single deep into the hole between second and third and the shortstop had no choice but to go to second with a toss that was a step late. The infield stopped playing for a second and with the ball loose on the ground, High was able to start running again and scored to clinch the game for North Central.
Megan Myers was 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI while Amanda Roth was also 2-4 with a double and earned the pitching victory, scattering 4 earned runs over 13 hits. Abbey Erzberger was 2-4 and Danelle Paegler was 1-3 with a double.
The Rams victories over the Sabercats wrap up North Central's season with a four game winning streak. Amanda Roth earned the pitching win in the last four games of the season for NCU and hit well over .500 this season which led the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. She also led the league in extra base hits despite being outside the top 40 players in at-bats during the year.
