Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- North Central University Baseball was in action on Tuesday in a home double-header against The University of Northwestern. The Rams lost both games to the Eagles as UNW completed a season sweep of the three game series in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play.
North Central (2-11, 0-9 UMAC) got in front in the first inning of game one when freshman Jordan Fair (Boyne City, Mich./Boyne City) lead off the inning by reaching on an error and stole second. Junior David Babcock (Fresno, Calif./Buchanan) then knocked in Fair with a one-out single to left that gave NCU a brief lead through one frame.
The Eagles responded with three runs on four hits in the top of the second. North Central was able to get a run back in their part of the inning. Sophomore Matthew Juve (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) doubled to right and moved up to third on a single by Jordan Fair. Fair then stole second and the throw allowed Juve to score from third to make it 3-2 after two innings.
Both teams were scoreless in the third before UNW added two more in the top of the fourth. North Central went down in order in the the bottom of the inning and UNW blew the game open in the top of the fifth four runs on five hits to make it 9-2 after five.
Northwestern tacked on a run in the top of the sixth before NCU posted a rally that got them back in the game in their at bat in the bottom of the inning. An error, a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for the Rams and Jordan Fair posted an RBI ground out to start the scoring. A wild pitch scored a runner from third and left one on third with one out. Junior Cody Van Sickle (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) then reached on an error that allowed another run to score. David Babcock then mashed a double to left that drove in Van Sickle to tighten the game up at 10-6 through six.
North Central sent the Eagles down in order in the seventh and added another run in the bottom of the frame when sophomore Andrew Eliason (Ypsilanti, Mich./Milan) led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Through seven innings NCU trailed 10-7.
But both teams were retired in order in the eighth and UNW added a pair in their final at bat. NCU went down swinging in their final at bat in a 12-7 loss.
David Babcock was 2-5 with a double and 2 RBI. Jordan Fair was 1-5 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases.
North Central struggled in the field in game two allowing 12 runs on 14 hits but just 4 runs were earned after the Rams committed 5 errors. NCU struggle in the field carried over to the plate where the Rams mangaged just two hits and one walk. Andrew Eliason was 1-2 with a walk.
The Rams are back in action this weekend with a three game series at home against Martin Luther College (New Ulm, Minn.). Friday's single nine-inning game versus MLC is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. Saturday's double-header is set for a Noon first pitch.
