Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Wis.-- North Central dropped both ends of a road double-header to Northland College on Wednesday afternoon. The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match-up between the Rams and Lumberjills was orginally scheduled for Tuesday but was delayed one day by cold and wet weather.
North Central (1-11, 0-7 UMAC) could not get their offense going in the midst of cold and windy weather on Wednesday in Ashland. In game one the Rams fell behind 1-0 after an inning and gave up an 8-spot in the second to trail 8-0 through two full innings.
Northland added a pair in the bottom of the third but NCU managed just two base runners in their first three at-bats and trailed 10-0 through three. A scoreless fourth for both teams gave way to the Rams final chance to keep the game alive. North Central made a great effort to battle back and managed to get some offense going.
Sophomore Amanda Johnson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley) reached on an error with one out and moved to second when freshman Abbey Erzberger (Brookfield, Wis./Heritage Christian) posted a two out single. Sophomore Holly Pieper (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) then loaded the bases with a two-out single. Freshman Amanda Roth (Neenah, Wis./Neehah) then knocked in two runs when she singled and advanced to second on an error but that would be all the Rams could get in an 11-2 loss in 5 innings.
Abbey Erzberger and Amanda Roth were each 2-3 on the day. The Rams committed seven errors in game one and the Jills made them pay at the plate with 10 hits.
Game two was even more difficult for North Central as the Rams were one hit while committing five errors in the field that allowed seven unearned runs in a 13-0 loss to the Jills. The biggest bright spot for the Rams continued to be the offensive production by Amanda Roth who recorded the only hit for NCU.
Roth is currently hitting .556 with a .579 on base percentage which are first and second in the conference respectively. Her 11 extra base hits are also tops in the UMAC despite being outside the top 50 in plate appearances. She has currently has a seven game hit streak going and has hit safely in 11 of the first 12 games of her college career including a double in 7 of those 12 games.
North Central will be back in action on Friday and Saturday in UMAC league double-headers. Friday NCU is at Crown College (St. Bonifacius, Minn.) for a 3 p.m. first pitch. Saturday the Rams are at The University of Minnesota-Morris (Morris, Minn.) for a 1 p.m. start.
