Brekhus With Double Overtime Winner for Rams

Box Score

Minneapolis, Minn.-- The North Central University Men's Soccer team won their first game of the 2015 season Friday afternoon as junior Ian Brekhus (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) scored the game-winner in double overtime against Bethany Lutheran College (Mankato, Minn.) to win 2-1.

The Rams (1-4, 1-2) first goal of the match came off the foot of freshman Isaiah Zilka, who scored off a beautiful pass from Brekhus in the 68th minute. Zilka was able to hook one over the charging keeper from Bethany Lutheran to give North Central a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings of Bethany Lutheran (0-6-1, 0-2-1) answered back seven minutes later as Mike Loguerico intercepted a pass between Rams defenseman and then shooting on an uncovered North Central net to tie the game at 1-1.

Keeper Andrew Eliason (Ypsilanti, Mich./Milan) made a game-saving stop in the 87th minute to force overtime. Eliason earlier in the match saved a penalty kick to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.

Possession was equal amongst the two teams for the first 13 minutes of overtime, before Brekhus was able to get behind the Vikings defense and beat keeper Matt Bitter for the game-winning goal.

The game marked the first ever Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game on the new turf in downtown Minneapolis at Elliot Park Field.

Next up for the Rams is a road contest against the Knights from Martin Luther College (New Ulm, Minn.) at 2:00 p.m on Saturday, September 19th.
