Swanson and High Shine in Regular Season Finale

SUPERIOR, Wis.-- Women's basketball fought for the full four quarters on Saturday but it was not enough to prevent the University of Wisconsin-Superior from completing an undefeated regular season in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action. The Yellowjackets built a big early lead and and never looked back on the way to a 72-60 win over North Central.

Norh Central fell behind after UW-Superior burried six, three point shots in the first quarter. The Rams trailed 32-14 after a quarter and despite outscoring the Yellowjackets in the second and fourth quarter by a combined nine points, UWS proved worthy of their conference regular season championship title.

The Rams claimed their only lead, 3-2, about a minute into the game. From there Superior made their next three shots and and five of the following seven to create a 16-5 lead. After the Rams got another basket, UWS got another three pointer and the difference was never less than 10 the rest of the night.

North Central was able to get within 11 at several points in the second half but that would be as close as they could climb against the hosts.

KEY PERFORMANCES OF THE NIGHT

Against the best team in the conference the Rams best players showed their ability to perform against all levels of competition. Sophomore Lizzy Swanson (Askov, Minn./East Central) posted 20 points and 7 rebounds. Swanson continues to be the leading scorer in the UMAC the season and is currently having the fourth best single season scoring in Rams history.

Senior Jamie High (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) scored 17 points with 11 rebounds. High finished the regular season with 1525 career points, just nine from the all-time North Central scoring record. Sophomore Marissa Kari (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) added 11 points on Saturday.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • UWS had 12 players score on Saturday night
  • North Central posted a respectable .404 shooting night but the Jackets answered with a .433 scoring rate
  • UWS outrebounded the Rams 39-30
  • NCU was 15-21 from the free throw line (.714) over 8 percent better than their season average

UP NEXT

North Central will host the NCCAA North Central Region Tournament next week. NCU has earned the second seed and will host third seed Faith Baptist Bible College (Ankeny, Iowa) at 6 p.m. next Friday evening.
