Mel Anderson enters his first season as Head Cross Country & Track & Field Coach at North Central University in 2026, bringing more than three decades of coaching, athlete development, and community leadership experience to the Rams. He was hired in July of 2026.
Throughout his coaching career, Anderson has helped more than 400 student-athletes continue their athletic careers at the NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, HBCU, and Ivy League levels across multiple sports. His athletes have gone on to earn conference championships, All-America honors, professional opportunities, and international competition experience, including representation with Team USA and the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Since 1999, Anderson has served as Founder and Executive Director of Youth & Families Determined To Succeed (YFDS), a nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of youth through wellness, leadership development, mentoring, and athletics. As part of YFDS, he founded Track Minnesota Elite, one of Minnesota's premier youth track & field organizations. Over the past 27 years, the program has served more than 5,000 young athletes while producing 42 AAU National Champions, three Nike National Champions, a U20 World Champion, multiple Team USA representatives, and more than 10 AAU All-Americans annually. Anderson also founded Maximum Impact Training, an athletic performance company that has provided individualized development and injury prevention training for hundreds of youth, collegiate, and professional athletes.
At the high school level, Anderson spent 11 seasons coaching track & field at The Blake School, including three years as head coach, leading the Bears to consecutive conference championships while establishing a culture centered on excellence and athlete development. His coaching résumé also includes decades of football coaching throughout Minnesota.
Before beginning his coaching career, Anderson was a standout football student-athlete at the University of Minnesota, where he competed as a wide receiver and return specialist from 1983-86. During his collegiate career, he set school records for the longest touchdown reception (89 yards), career kickoff return average, and career kickoff return yards, and still ranks second in Gopher history in career kickoff return yards. He went on to fulfill a lifelong dream by playing professionally for his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers.
Anderson's coaching philosophy emphasizes developing complete student-athletes through faith, accountability, servant leadership, and meaningful relationships. His vision is to build a championship-caliber program that excels on the course, in the classroom, and in the community while preparing student-athletes for lifelong success.
Mel and his wife, Lisa, reside in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. They have three children: Isaac, Taylor, and Elise.
