Rams Take Down Eagles at Home

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -  The North Central University (NCU) women's basketball team continued their home stand as they hosted the University of Northwestern (UNW) in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play. The highly anticipated match-up did not disappoint. Behind some crucial late shooting and key free throw shooting NCU cruised to a much needed victory by a score of 65-57.

  • NCU held UNW to 4 second quarter points.
  • NCU shot 82.4 percent (14-for-17) as a team from the free throw line.
  • NCU out scored UNW 32-20 in the 4th quarter to secure the win. 
Game Recap
  •  Both teams struggled early in the first quarter to get points on the board. UNW opened the game with a quick 6-0 run, all while holding NCU to a scoreless 5 minutes. NCU finally got on the board with a pair of Naomi Hagstrom free throws. NCU had 8 turnovers in the first quarter, which caused them to trail UNW 11-5 at the end of the quarter. NCU opened the second quarter with a much needed 10-0 run, forcing a UNW timeout. With 6:08 left in the second quarter NCU led 15-11. Senior Haleigh Filerr scored 7 of her game high 10 first half points in the second quarter, giving NCU a 21-15 halftime lead. The second half did not disappoint. UNW and NCU traded baskets for much of the third quarter. UNW clawed their way back into the game with 3 straight three point baskets, giving them a 31-29 lead with 4:15 left in the third quarter. UNW grew their lead to 4 points as they lead 37-33 at the end of the third quarter. Through some key defensive stops and critical free throw shooting, NCU came back to tie the game up at 39. A big three point shot by Allison Bulthuis gave NCU a 48-47 lead with 4:55 left in the fourth quarter. With time winding down, a clutch three point shot by Naomi Hagstrom and a pair of free throws by Haleigh Filer saw NCU with their biggest lead of the game. With 58.9 seconds left in the game NCU led UNW by a score of 61-54. That was all NCU needed as they got the huge home victory by a score of 65-57.

  • The women's basketball team will hit the road on Wednesday, January 23rd. They will travel to Duluth, Minnesota to face the Saints of St. Scholastic. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
