Frigid weather not enough to slow down the Eagles, Rams fall at home on Senior Day

MINNEAPOLIS -- North Central University (NCU) welcomed the rival Eagles of Northwestern University to Elliot Park Field on Saturday afternoon. Both teams battled in the early going, fighting each other and the conditions. After the two competed in a close first period, the Eagles brought the fire to a rather cold afternoon to bust open the contest in the final period as they pulled away for a 4-1 victory.

Game Vitals

  • Tian Elder made his first start of the year in goal, ended with 25 saves
  • UNW recorded 45 shots on the afternoon
  • In a very physical match, the two combined for 4 yellow cards
Game Recap

The St. Paul / Minneapolis rivalry was present in the early going as both teams refused to give up any ground on either end. After a slow start to the contest for both offenses,  the two squads began to heat up. Northwestern was the first to strike as they found the back of the net in the 20th minute to take the 1-0. After falling behind, the Rams continued to ramp up their offensive aggression. In the 26th minute the Rams, searching for an answer to tie the game, found a streaking Adam Vang up the sideline who rocketed a shot that was sent back by the UNW goalkeeper. Elliot Lebsack was the beneficiary of a ball not corralled by the Eagles as he was able to get off two more shots in a matter of seconds, with the second finding the twine to knot the game up at 1-1. Seeing the lead evaporate the Eagles seemed poised to steal the momentum right back. After coming up just short on a few scoring opportunities the Eagles were able to steal back the lead in the 31st minute with a goal that fell just past the reach of NCU goalkeeper Tian Elder. After a back and forth bout in the first period, the Eagles seemed to take control of the match in the second period. UNW continued to find scoring chances and they were able to capitalize. The Eagles connected on goals in the 72nd and 73rd minute to pull away in a 4-1 victory over the Rams.

Key Performers Next Up
NCU now has a week off from competition as they prepare to battle the Storm of Crown College. The Rams will make the short trip to St. Bonifacius on Saturday, October 19th for the 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
