Rams Winning Streak Moves to Five

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -  The North Central University (NCU) women's basketball team hosted the LumberJills of Northland College on Wednesday night. The Rams looked to continue their winning streak and stay in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) playoff race. In a low scoring affair NCU got the win at home by a score of 60-55 behind a double-double from senior Haleigh Filer.

  • Haleigh Filer recorded her 1st double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds. 
  • NCU attempted 30 free throws in the contest compared to the Northland 12 attempts. 
  • NCU won the field goal percentage battle by a narrow margin 37.7 percent (20-for-53) to the Northland 30.4 percent (21-for-69)
Game Recap
  • Northland college used quick back to back buckets to jump out to a quick lead early in the 1st quarter. But NCU followed with a quick 10-2 run to take the lead 10-7 midway through the 1st quarter. NCU outscored Northland 13-4 over the final 8 minutes of the 1st quarter behind 6 points from Naomi Hagstrom. NCU started sluggish in the 2nd quarter, going 3 minutes without scoring a point. However, a Haleigh Filer coast-to-coast layup ended that scoring drought. Northland continued to battle as they used a 5-0 run to take the lead 18-17 with just under 3 minutes to play in the quarter. NCU grabbed a late lead 24-20 heading into the halftime break. Haleigh Filer led NCU with 10 1st half points. Northland and NCU came out in the 2nd half swinging. The two continued to trade baskets throughout much of the early minutes in the 3rd quarter. NCU slowly started to pull ahead by scoring 6 straight points giving them a 40-32 lead with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Heading into the final quarter of play NCU led Northland 42-35. NCU came out of the break with back-to-back baskets. Northland would not go quietly, as they continued to claw at the NCU lead. Northland used a 9-0 run to cut the NCU lead to 2 with 5:37 remaining in the game. Northland would use yet another run, this time a 5-0 run to bring the game within 1. Northland tied the game up with 1:45 left in the 4th quarter making the score 53-53. 3 made free throws by Naomi Hagstrom put NCU up 56-53 with 51.8 seconds remaining in the contest. A pair of free throws gave NCU a 59-55 lead with 11.2 seconds remaining in the contest. NCU used some key free throw shooting and defense late in the game to get the victory at home by a score of 60-55.

  • The Rams look to stay in playoff contention as they hit the road to Morris, Minnesota where they will face the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars on February 9th. The contest is slated to tip at 3 p.m.
