Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer gets back into play after a week off

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After a week off of game play, the North Central University (NCU) women's soccer team hopped just a city over to take on the University of Northwestern (UNW) for the second time this season. The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup was a respectfully played game, and the Eagles won this one 7-1.

Game Vitals

  • The Rams were down Rachel Lampton (Lake Villa, IL, Lakes Community High School) and Hannah Fischer (Port Washington, WI, Living Word Lutheran High School), two vital players in NCU's backline.
  • Over 80% of NCU's shot were on goal, displaying the excellent shot selection that the Rams have.

Game Recap

On a perfect night to play some soccer, the whistle blew and each team was off battling to win the ball and put it in the opposing team's net. The Eagles got a couple of goals early, but the Rams answered back quickly with a well placed ball right over the keeper's hands by Alexis Orlando (Rosemount, MN, Rosemount High School). Orlando had five total shots and four on goal. NCU played compactly in the middle to keep the Eagles midfielders' play minimal. And when the Rams won the ball in that middle, players Hannah Grubbs (Mantua, OH, Newbury High School) and Kara Lewis (Mandeville, LA, Northlake Christian School) were able to distribute the ball high and wide to Orlando, Mia Wajda (Gejiu, China, Centennial High School), Katrina Conrad (St. Paul, MN, St. Croix Lutheran Academy), and Leanna Kyle (Blaine, MN, Blaine High School).

Goalkeeper Arien Fritts (Ham Lake, MN, Fritts Homeschool Academy) directed the backline well in the absence of some key defenders. Fritts had 19 saves in the match, including an excellent save off of a penalty kick in the second half. Although NCU was down, it didn't show in how they played. If anything, the Rams played as if their season was on the line, creating more attacking opportunities as the clock winded down. Lewis crossed in many great balls towards the end, narrowly missing the heads and feet of her teammates. NCU, though the score wasn't what they would have liked, persevered and showed their consistent character that they are known for as they finished through the 90th minute.

Looking Ahead

The Rams play Crown College for the third time this season and are extremely eager for the rematch. The UMAC game will be held at NCU this Friday at 1 pm. All fans are encouraged to follow official Rams Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages for updates on the women's soccer team and more important information.
