Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer fight hard under the lights

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- With the rain holding off and under the lights, the North Central University (NCU) men's soccer team faced Martin Luther College (MLC) for the second time this season. The Knights came out on top in this one with a final score of 4-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup.

Game Vitals
  • MLC had 12 fouls in the game, compared to NCU's two.
  • Despite the number of goals, the teams had a similar amount of shots taken with 25 for the Knights and 19 for the Rams.

Game Recap

From the first whistle, these teams battled hard against each other. They traded shots and were on both sides of the field fairly equally. NCU had a two minute span early in the game that generate four shots, two from Diego Zavala-Varela (Brooklyn Park, MN, Park Center Senior High School), and one each from Adam Vang (Green Bay, WI, Green Bay Southwest High School) and Weston Buckley (Budapest, HU, International Christian School of Budapest), which were all within inches of reaching the back of the net. The Knights were the first to get a goal in the 22nd minute followed by another in the 25th minute. Goalkeeper Sam Thurston (Crystal, MN, Robbinsdale Cooper) got a lot of action tonight with many shots coming off of MLC's combination play or fast break. Thurston had nine saves out of the back.

After the half, the Knights increased their score to four quite quickly in the second 45. The Rams took the goals in stride and kept attacking MLC's defenders. Vang was all over the field, making runs and weaving through the defense. Alex Loukinen (Little Falls, MN, Little Falls High School) manned the middle of the field using his strength and excellent foot skills to keep the ball. Freshman Carson Kleiber (Wausau, WI, Wausau West High School) stunned the Knights' backline with his speed and nearly got a goal for NCU multiple times. The Rams played pretty evenly with the Knights despite the final score.

Wrapping up the season, the Rams play their final regular season and senior day game this coming Saturday at home against Bethany Lutheran College at 6 pm.
