Game Recap
After the long trip down south, NCU took the field in hopes of taking down RU in their first match in pool play.
Weston Buckley (Budapest, HU, International Christian School of Budapest) had a shot the was just wide in the beginning minutes to test the Saints' goalkeeper. RU had a few corner kicks early, but all were defended by the Rams. The Saints netted the first goal of the game in the 25th minute. However, NCU held their ground and responded with a couple of shots, one from
Jerad Buse (Kearney, NE, Kearney High School) that was blocked, and another by
Alex Loukinen (Little Falls, MN, Little Falls High School) that was just over the goal.
The Rams went into halftime down just one goal, aiming to generate more offense in the second half. The teams battled hard in the midfield, trying to keep possession of the ball. RU scored their second goal of the match in the 69th minute despite the Rams' best efforts. NCU goalkeeper,
Luke Matteucci (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva High School), played well in spite of the goals, with 11 saves. In the remaining 20 minutes, the Rams hunkered down and pushed up as much as they could. Center back,
Tyler Johnsen (Lindstrom, MN, Chisago Lakes High School), got an amazing shot off in the 88th minute that was narrowly saved by the Saints' keeper. NCU kept up the fight till the final whistle and look to keep that fight up in the coming games.
