Game Recap: Baseball |

North Central comes away with sweep against Knights

NEW ULM, Minn. -- Halfway through their conference slate and still fighting to stay in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference playoff picture, North Central University (NCU) baseball was on the road Wednesday afternoon against the Martin Luther College (MLC) Knights. In sweeping fashion, the Rams tallied a total of 38 hits on the day, the most on the season thus far. The high-powered offensive showing supported by reliable defense was good enough for NCU to come away with both games against the Knights by final scores of 17 to five and 15 to zero.

Game One Recap

It was a game of offense and season-highs for multiple Rams in game one, highlighted by a monumental third and eighth inning where the blue and gold managed to bat through the lineup multiple times and put up a combined 12 runs in the two innings alone. After being knotted up at one all heading into the top of the second inning, NCU tacked three runs across on Daniel Montana (Tucson, AZ, Cienega High School) and Primeau Hill (Andover, MN, Legacy Christian Academy) base hits. After Tyler Bloom (Montello, WI, Montello High School) shut the Knights offense down on the mound in the top of the third, the Rams put across eight runs to make the score 12 to one in the bottom half of the inning. In just the third inning, Bloom manufactured both an RBI double and RBI single that brought home Jack Parker (Bordentown, NJ, Bordentown Regional High School) and HillRene Brockman (Tucson, AZ, Desert View High School) and Kyle Huerth (Moorpark, CA, Moorpark High School) both managed doubles that brought in two runners as well. Once the Knights finally managed to record a third out in the inning, the hit parade didn't stop there for the blue and gold. Chris Harding (Carol Stream, IL, West Chicago High School), Justin Torres (Palatine, IL, Palatine High School), Bloom and Parker sparked the Rams towards the end of the game with four RBI base hits that scored four additional runs in the top of the eighth, increasing NCU's lead 17 to five. When all was said and done, Bloom went the distance pitching for the Rams to keep the score heavily favor while the defense only committed one error.

Game Two Recap

It was another game of offense for the blue and gold, as their momentum from the first game directly carried over to the second right away. It was consistent production at the plate throughout, as the Rams only went scoreless in the second and sixth innings. After getting one run across in the top of the first, Huerth increased NCU's lead to three on an RBI single through the left side, bringing home ParkerThe fourth inning served as the offensive surge for North Central, as the order batted through again and scored seven runs. Kristian Garcia (Las Vegas, NV, Palo Verde High School) sent a shot that cleared the left wall. The hit was incredibly timely for NCU as well due to the bases being loaded, good enough for Garcia's first home run of his collegiate career to turn into a grand slam. After the inning, the defense continued their outstanding play by not comitting a single error. Torres earned the start for the Rams and shut the Knights down the entire afternoon, only giving up one base on balls and scattering seven hits throughout the shortened game. North Central cruised away to their third conference win of the season by a final score of 15 to zero.

Key Performers
  • Tyler Bloom got the start for the Rams in game one and was lights out. The freshman phenom scattered five earned runs on seven hits across eight innings, while striking out a season-high 11 batters in the process. Bloom also led the NCU offense, going 5-for-6 and recording four RBIs.
  • Rene Brockman managed to go 4-for-6 at the plate, three of which Brockman legged out into doubles.
  • Daniel Montana posted a 3-for-4 showing in the box, good enough to tally two RBIs and score three runs.
  • Kristian Garcia had his best performance as a Ram yet by going 3-for-5 and recording two RBIs in game two.
  • Justin Torres had a career day on the mound in game two where he went the distance all seven innings and did not let a run get across the plate.
Looking Ahead

North Central baseball now improves to an overall record of 4-9 (3-6 UMAC) on the 2021 season.
