Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball records 23 hits to pick up UMAC win against Lumberjacks

ASHLAND, Wis. -- North Central University (NCU) baseball hit the road and traveled across the Minnesota-Wisconsin boarder on Wednesday, where they squared off with the Northland College (NC) Lumberjacks in another doubleheader Upper Midwest Athletic Conference showdown. Despite falling in game one and not being able to manufacture much offensive production, the Rams responded as best as they have all season in an emphatic way in game two, recording 23 hits to route the Lumberjacks 22 to three.

Game One Recap

North Central entered the day looking to capitalize on their split with Northland earlier in the year. Tyler Bloom (Montello, WI, Montello High School) earned the start for the Rams on the mound and managed to get through the bottom of the first inning without letting up a run. The great start for the Rams defensively was responded to well by Northland in the bottom of the second, where they collected seven hits that pushed 11 runs across the plate in the inning alone. This then forced a pitching change for NCU about halfway through. Tanner Oka (Mililani, HI, Hanalani School) took the hill with the score at five to zero, but Northland still managed to execute with several runners already on base. Despite the heavy offensive inning from the Lumberjack bats, the Rams responded well from a defensive standpoint. NCU allowed only one more run in the fifth inning, largely due to Oka scattering just two hits across the next four innings pitched in the latter half of the game, resulting in only one earned run. Even with Oka's efforts on the mound to prevent Northland from finding anymore surges at the plate, the Rams' bats were not able to get going at any point. Three total hits from the blue and gold in game one resulted in a 12 to zero final.

Game Two Recap

The Rams came into game two and completely flipped the script on Northland, responding with a season-high 23 hits that manufactured 22 runs to the Lumberjacks' three. Getting NCU's scoring frenzy started in the top of the first was Jack Parker (Bordentown, NJ, Bordentown Regional High School), who sent a solo shot over the fence to put the Rams up one run. After holding the Lumberjack bats, the Rams capitalized in a big way in the second and fifth innings of the game. With the bases loaded, Justin Torres doubled to knock in all three runners to put NCU up 5 to zero. After Northland responded in the bottom of the second with two runs of their own to cut NCU's lead to three, the Rams put up a single-inning season high 10 runs on nine hits to put up a wide margin of 16 to two on the scoreboard. The inning comprised of doubles from Parker , Chris Harding (Carol Stream, IL, West Chicago High School), and Kristian Garcia (Las Vegas, NV, Palo Verde High School), all of which brought runners around to home. After the hitting spree, the Rams continued their game two performance at the plate with a Rene Brockman (Tucson, AZ, Desert View High School) home run and Daniel Montana (Tucson, AZ, Cienega High School) double in the top of the sixth. After a final double from Brockman in the top of the seventh that scored Kyle Huerth (Moorpark, CA, Moorpark High School) and Hardingthe Rams came away with their fourth UMAC win of the year by a final score of 22 to three.

Key Performers
  • Rene Brockman posted a 3-for-6 game two at the plate and four RBIs, highlighted by the shortstop's seventh home run of the year.
  • Justin Torres (Palatine, IL, Palatine High School) took the mound for North Central in game two and managed to go the full seven innings of action, scattering six hits while striking out six in the process. The veteran also went 3-for-5 in the box in game two with two doubles and three RBIs.
  • Catcher Jack Parker scored three runs for the Rams while launching his fourth home run of the season, recording a total of three RBIs on the day.
  • Tyler Bloom recorded four base hits, four runs scored, an RBI, and a walk.
Looking Ahead

After moving to a 7-14 overall (4-11 UMAC) record, North Central baseball will look to finish strong in their next matchup. This Friday, the Rams will hit the road one last time and officially wrap up their 2021 season against the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings at ISG Field in Mankato, Minnesota.
