MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- As the North Central University (NCU) women's soccer team finished up the regular season, they entered the
Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) playoffs game looking to capitalize on their win last week against the Lumberjills. North Central clashed again with Northland College (NC) and fought ferociously for all 90 minutes of action. The Rams left it all on the field and ultimately fell to the conference foe by a narrow margin, three to one.
Game Vitals
- The score was 1-1 heading into the half.
- NCU has remained un-scored upon by corner kicks this season, with three unsuccessful attempts by NC.
Game Recap
This Monday game was a very quick turnaround for the Rams as they played Saturday in their final regular season game. Nevertheless, the banged up NCU team stood on the field one last time to defend their downtown university. The Rams played compacted in the middle to force the LumberJills outside and catch their opponents in offside traps. The trap was set numerous times by back line
Rachel Cribb (Lake Villa, IL, Lakes Community High School) and
Annalise Gehrke (Plymouth, MN, For Him Academy) and helped slow down the game for NCU. NC scored early on, but around the 43rd minute,
Hannah Grubbs (Mantua, OH, Newbury High School) took the ball down the sideline and slotted the ball into the near post to tie the game at half.
Kara Lewis was tremendous at pressuring NC's back line and creating scoring opportunities throughout the whole game. Goalkeeper,
Arien Fritts (Ham Lake, MN, Fritts Homeschool Academy), almost went out towards the end of the game from a knee to the stomach, but toughed it out and recorded six saves on the night.
Hannah Fischer (Port Washington, WI, Living Word Lutheran High School),
Karley Johnson (Eagan, MN, Eagan High School), and
Lideeya Lwoy (Willmar, MN, Willmar Senior High School) dominated the middle of the field, making it close to impossible for the LumberJills to get to the goal through the center of the field. It was a tough game from the start and the Rams really left it all on the field and are proud of their play despite the 1-3 loss.
Looking Ahead
The women's soccer team managed to come away with several positives from their 2021 season, despite the hoops they had to jump through and challenges faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Rams progressed tremendously as a unit throughout the spring. Head Coach
Colette Montgomery was vital in keeping this team and season alive and pushing each player to be the best that they could be. The Rams will look to return their core starting group from this season into the fall slate.
