SUPERIOR, Wisc. -- Looking to further their win streak, the North Central University (NCU) women's basketball team traveled to the University of Wisconsin Superior (UWS) for another
Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup. The Yellowjackets start out strong, but the Rams pushed back in the second half to get the win over the UWS, 47-44.
Game Recap
The Yellowjackets were hot from deep in the first quarter and got up by as many as eight points in the opening minutes. However, NCU collected themselves and took back the lead by the end of the first. It was a game of defense in the first half as both teams struggled to find the net. The Rams locked in their zone defense in the second quarter, making UWS use the whole shot clock to even get a decent look.
Naomi Hagstrom (Zimmerman, MN, Zimmerman High School)'s three offensive boards in the first 20 minutes helped NCU gain much needed momentum on the attack. Yet, it was still a competitive game with the Yellowjackets up by one at the half.
The opening of the third quarter was the beginning of the fight for the Rams. NCU had more energy and execution across the board creating some margin on the scoreboard.
Emily DiGiorgio (Ironwood, MI, Luther L. Wright High School)Â was vital in this win for the Rams, especially in the second half, as she put up 15 points in just the third and fourth quarters. To close the third quarter,
Aubrey Robinson (Colorado Springs, CO, Sierra High School) hit a fast break corner three to give NCU a four point lead. The Rams maintained this lead throughout the last ten minutes hitting important free throws down the stretch.
With the victory, NCU moves to 19-3 and 8-3 in the
UMAC, continuing their historic season.
