MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Playing in their last home game of the season, the North Central University (NCU) women's basketball team hosted Martin Luther College (MLC) for the first round of the
Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament. What was a close game at the start turned into a smooth wins for the Rams as they beat the Knights 68-55.
Game Recap
The first quarter of the game was neck and neck as both teams were desperate to keep their season alive. Each team traded baskets and it was tied at 14-14 came at the end of the first quarter. NCU came out to an explosive start in the second quarter to build a lead that lasted until the very end as they outscored MLC 23-13. The Rams shot a collective 61% in the second ten minutes as their offense heated up.
Naomi Hagstrom (Zimmerman, MN, Zimmerman High School) contributed to that score as she cut to the basket and finished multiple times. NCU's defense stepped up to stop the motion of the Knights and made the score 37-27 at the half.
The opening of the third was more competitive than the second as the teams traded buckets again.
Emily DiGiorgio (Ironwood, MI, Luther L. Wright High School) started to control the paint using her size over the shorter MLC posts.
Aubrey Robinson (Colorado Springs, CO, Sierra High School) and
Joelle Talso (Ramsey, MN, Spring Lake Park High School) cleaned up the boards as they had 12 and nine rebounds respectively. While the fourth quarter was close to start, the Rams built their lead even more a couple minutes in with the help of some three's from
Kadija Conteh (London, UK, City of London Academy). A couple of lock down possessions on defense sealed the deal for NCU as they beat the Knights 68-55.
With the win, the Rams get their third playoff game in program history and improve their record to 22-4 in the postseason.Â
