Minneapolis, MN -- Wednesday, the North Central University (NCU) men's basketball team hosted the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF) Falcons at Clark-Danielson Gymnasium. In the previous meeting between these two teams during the UWRF Holiday Classic Invitational last season, the Falcons defeated the Rams with a final score of 79-68. Tonight, although the Rams fought hard in the first half, the Falcons would ultimately see another victory with a final score of 72-61.
North Central started off strong with high energy at the beginning of the first half. North Central dominated in the paint, with highlight reel plays from
Remy Wedgeworth-Brown,
Carrington McNeal, and
Malik Siggers. McNeal's mid-range and
Cameron Thomas's post-play helped extend North Central's lead to 12 points midway through the first as they consistently capitalized on turnovers. North Central forced 7 Falcon turnovers in the first half. Toward the end of the first, UWRF started to claw their way back into the game as they found success in the paint and cut the Rams' lead to just 6 with 3:48 to play. With just seconds on the clock, Malik Sigger's crossover got the Falcon's defender off balance as he rose up for the mid-range dagger to give NCU the momentum headed into half up 37-27.
Carrington McNeal helped the Rams pick up where they left off as he turned a steal into a fastbreak and-one to electrify the crowd. However, River Falls quickly cut into the lead with a 10-2 run to make it a 5-point game early in the second. The Teams traded buckets until the midway point of the second where the Falcons were able to tie the game at 49-49. UW-River Falls built their lead late in the second half, as the Rams' defensive efforts began to slip. The turning point came in the final minutes of the game, as UW-River Falls capitalized on turnovers and missed shots by North Central, extending their lead with successful defensive stops. Ultimately, despite a strong first-half effort from the Rams, the Falcons defense and efficient scoring in the second half sealed a 72-61 win.
