Superior, WI -- This afternoon, the North Central University (NCU) baseball team returned to the NBC Spartan Sports Complex to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) Yellowjackets. Yesterday, the teams split 1-1 as NCU was able to take game one 3-2, largely in part due to the strong pitching. Today, the Rams led through the first 4 innings and were tied heading into the 7th. In the bottom of the inning, the wheels fell off for North Central as the Yellowjackets totaled 6 hits on their way to 7 runs and an 8-1 lead. UWS ended up winning game three 9-1.
The first inning would go scoreless. In the top of the second, Willy Cruz and Lorenzo Bazan would both single. Chris Garza laid a sac bunt to bump them into scoring position. Nate Boyer would then reach on a Superior throwing error that would score Cruz from third base. North Central's freshman pitcher, Nick Julian, anchors the Rams by putting up zeros through the first four innings. However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Yellowjackets would get on the board after a ground-rule double and a single to deep center field. The sixth inning would then go scoreless. In the bottom of the seventh, things would start to go wrong for the Rams. UWS was able to get a beat on NCU's relief pitcher, rattling off 6 hits and scoring 7 runs to blow the game open. In the top of the eighth, it appeared that the Rams were going to have an answer after their first two batters got on with zero outs. UW-Superior made a mid-inning pitching change that paid off big time as the Rams struck out twice and grounded out the other, leaving two runners on. UWS tacked on 1 more run in the bottom of the inning before NCU would be retired in the top of the ninth and UW-Superior walked away with the 9-1 victory.
