Davenport, FL -- North Central University (NCU) baseball opened their 2025 campaign in Florida at the Russmatt Invitational Tournament with a doubleheader matchup versus the Mount St. Joseph University (MSJ) Lions. The Rams battled in a close Game 1 but ultimately fell 6-1 before struggling in Game 2, dropping a 20-1 contest. North Central will look to bounce back tomorrow against Bluffton University.
Game 1: NCU 1, MSJ 6
The Rams got off to a promising start in their season opener, responding to an early MSJ run with a first-inning RBI double by junior
Dawson Barson, which brought sophomore
Caleb Alfaro home to tie the game at 1-1. Pitching kept the game tight through six innings, as junior
Tim Yohan Dixon threw five strong frames, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four. The game remained locked at 1-1 until the seventh inning when MSJ broke through with a five-run outburst, highlighted by a grand slam. Offensively, NCU collected five hits, including a double from Alfaro and a single from graduate
Nate Boyer. However, they struggled to push across more runs against MSJ's pitching.
Game 2: NCU 1, MSJ 20
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Rams ran into trouble early as MSJ's offense exploded for five runs in the first inning, followed by seven in the second, and five more in the third. MSJ took full advantage of 16 hits and four North Central errors, building an insurmountable lead. NCU's lone run came in the sixth inning, when
Dawson Barson reached base and later scored on a passed ball. Barson also recorded one of the team's two hits, with
Caleb Alfaro adding a single.
Brian Dahlstrand,
Crespin Herrera Il-Kult, and
Cameron Stout all saw action in relief, with Stout tossing a team-best three innings, striking out three while allowing two earned runs.
