NEW ULM, MINNESOTA - The Rams women's soccer team delivered one of its most impressive performances of the season, battling to a 1-1 draw against Martin Luther College, a team sitting third in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) standings. Despite playing with one fewer player for more than half the contest, the Rams refused to back down, demonstrating tremendous heart, determination, and resilience against one of the conference's top teams.
FIRST HALF
The Rams entered Saturday's matchup determined to make a statement and wasted little time finding an offensive opportunity. After Sorbo recorded two early saves, de Abreu helped generate pressure in the attacking third, sending her first shot wide in the sixth minute.
Just moments later, North Central earned a penalty kick opportunity, and de Abreu stepped up to deliver. In the eighth minute, she confidently converted from the spot to give the Rams an early 1-0 advantage.
NCU continued pushing forward, with de Abreu generating two additional shots in the 16th and 17th minutes as the Rams looked to extend their lead.
Despite playing shorthanded for much of the contest, North Central's defensive unit continued to battle against a persistent Martin Luther attack. The Knights eventually found an equalizer through a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, evening the score at 1-1.
The Rams remained composed through the closing stages of the half. Sorbo made two important saves in the 37th and 38th minutes, helping NCU preserve the tie heading into halftime.
SECOND HALF
With the match tied at one, North Central returned to the field determined to finish the job despite facing a numerical disadvantage.
The Rams nearly regained the lead immediately after halftime when Joselyn Eckhart put a shot on goal in the 48th minute, forcing a save. De Abreu continued creating opportunities, adding attempts in the 52nd and 55th minutes as NCU refused to settle into a purely defensive approach.
As the second half progressed, North Central's defensive effort became the defining story of the afternoon. Deshawna Hodges, Joyce Horton, Ramiyah Words, Chloe Bjorlin, and Ellason Popken helped anchor a determined defensive unit that battled through sustained pressure.
Sorbo continued to deliver in goal, making a key save in the 62nd minute before coming up with two more important stops in the 83rd and 87th minutes. The Rams held firm through the closing moments, refusing to surrender the go-ahead goal and securing a well-earned 1-1 draw.
North Central's defensive effort and ability to capitalize on its opportunities proved crucial.
Sorbo finished with eight saves across the full 90 minutes, while de Abreu led the Rams offensively with six shots and her first-half goal. Eckhart added NCU's other shot on target.
Playing shorthanded for more than half the match against one of the conference's top teams, North Central showed that its character and determination extend well beyond its record. Saturday's performance was a testament to the resilience of a group that continues to fight for each other every time it takes the field.
