Ellendale, ND -- Entering the first round of the NCCAA DII North Regional Tournament, the #4 North Central University (NCU) men's basketball team traveled west for a matchup versus #5 Oak Hills Christian College (OHCC) Wolfpack. With another opportunity at a postseason championship in front of them, the Rams began their quest for a back-to-back national title in dominant fashion, rolling to a 74-50 victory.
The Rams wasted no time setting the tone defensively and from beyond the arc. After a defensive stop and early block from senior forward
Elijah Smith, senior guard
Carmello McNeal drilled a three-pointer at the 18:22 mark to open the scoring. Just seconds later, McNeal knocked down another triple to give NCU the early edge. Midway through the half, senior guard
Carrington McNeal began to take control. Following a steal, he converted at the rim and added two free throws to push the lead to 12-5. The Rams' defensive pressure forced multiple turnovers, turning them into transition opportunities. A three-pointer from
Carmello McNeal extended the lead to 23-21 before NCU created separation with a decisive run. Over the final six minutes of the half, North Central's offense caught fire.
Carrington McNeal buried a three-pointer with 1:10 remaining to make it 39-23, and
Carmello McNeal followed with a steal and layup. Senior guard
Jaquan Adams capped the half with a bucket at the buzzer as the Rams carried a commanding 43-25 lead into the break.
Oak Hills opened the second half with a three, but the Rams quickly responded.
Carrington McNeal scored inside and then knocked down a three-pointer to stretch the lead back to 18. Moments later, senior guard
Remy Wedgeworth-Brown connected from deep off a
Carmello McNeal assist to push the advantage to 51-30. The Rams continued to dominate both ends of the floor.
Carrington McNeal hit another three at the 13:34 mark to make it 57-37, and
Carmello McNeal added back-to-back baskets to extend the cushion past 20. Sophomore guard
Ari Pierson provided a spark off the bench, knocking down two three-pointers in a two-minute stretch to balloon the lead to 67-37. North Central's defensive intensity never wavered. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and converted them into 17 points, while also owning a 40-27 rebounding advantage and outscoring the Wolfpack 14-6 in second-chance points.Â

Following the win, the Rams will continue NCCAA Regional play tomorrow, March 3rd, as they take on #1-seeded Faith Baptist Bible College at the Ray Ulmer Field House in Ellendale, ND. Tip-off for that matchup is set for 3:00 PM.
