Softball Falls to the Knights in UMAC Opener

NEW ULM, Minn. – North Central University (NCU) hit the road for their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action of the 2019 season as they faced off with the Knights of Martin Luther College (MLC). The Rams could not find an answer for the Knight offense in either contest as they combined for 37 hits between the two ballgames en route to the series sweep with 19-1 and 13-1 victories over NCU.

GAME ONE RECAP
Ali Cornelius (L, 1-9) took the mound for the Rams in game number one, and looked comfortable in the early going getting three quick outs in the first frame. The Knights hitters zeroed in on Cornelius in the second inning however, driving home eight runs in the frame and adding another ten in the bottom half of the third to lead 18-1. The Knights added one more run to their lead in the 4th inning as they pulled away for the 19-1 victory. Cornelius finished her outing with three strikeouts in her 4.0 innings pitched and Emily Loop led all Ram's hitters from the plate with one hit and one run knocked in.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Knight's offense continued to hum in the second contest as they jumped on game two starter, Emma Bushey (L, 1-10), for six runs on seven hits, highlighted by a lead off home run. MLC continued to pile on runs as they manufactured at least one in every inning throughout the ball game. Rachel Loukinen got the Rams in the run column with a shot up the middle of the field in the fourth inning, but it was not enough to spark a comeback for NCU. The Knights answered back in the bottom of the fourth frame to put the Rams in a spot to extend the game in the 5th inning and they could not find a way to manufacture any runs as they fell by a score of 13-1.

Next Up
The Rams will have two days off as they prepare to battle a familiar face, the Cougars of Minnesota Morris, on Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The UMAC doubleheader is slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch for game number one.
