Rams hold Saints to one second half score, NCU edged in conference opener

DULUTH, Minn. -- North Central University (NCU) hit the road on Tuesday afternoon as they battled with the Saints of St. Scholastica in the first match of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. The Saints flew out of the gates scoring two goals in the first 5 minutes of play to steal an early lead. Scholastica used their quick start to propel them to a 9-0 victory over the Rams to begin conference play.

Game Vitals

  • The Rams held the Saints to just one goal in the second half
  • The Saints finished with 54 total shots (28 on goal)
  • Ellie Tieszen finished with 19 saves (New career high for Tieszen)

Game Recap

The Saints were impressive from the beginning, connecting on two separate goals just one minute apart to take a 2-0 lead just 5 minutes into the contest. The Rams attempted to ramp up the defensive pressure, but the task of slowing the Saint's attack proved very difficult. Scholastica shared the ball extremely well, making it difficult on the Ram defenders despite their effort. Scholastica finished the afternoon with 7 assists on their 9 goals. After busting out to an 8-0 lead at the break, the Rams were able to hold the Saints to just one goal in the final 45 minutes, but could not find much offensive rhythm as they fell to the Saints 9-0.

After an impressive 90 minutes from the Saints, Ram's Coach Colette Montgomery had nothing but great things to say about the opponent and her own player's adjustments in the second half.

"Credit to St. Scholastica for their attacking play. Our players were able to take the experiences from the first half and strategically defend with excellence in the second half, keeping the score at just 1-0 in the last 45 minutes. Ellie Tieszen had a fantastic performance throughout, finishing with 19 saves. Overall a gritty defensive performance and one that we will use as we continue to build our defensive strategy for our next matchup with Bethany Lutheran College this upcoming weekend."
