MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The North Central University (NCU) women's basketball team went on the road for their first game of the season against Alverno College (AC). The nonconference team was no match for the Rams as they beat the Inferno 72-39.
Game Recap
As is the case for most first games, each team has to find their rhythm as they start the season. NCU and AC spent the first half doing just that. The Rams started out the game with a fast paced tempo that was hard for the Inferno to keep up with. NCU's 'high-hand' defense generated 18 steals which led to 28 fast break points.
Mary Seegers (Oconomowoc, WI, Homeschool) led the team with five of her own steals. AC mostly traded baskets with NCU in the first half, with a halftime score of 29-17 for the Rams.
However, with 20 minutes of game time under their belts, NCU came out very strong in the second half. The Rams went on a 16-2 run in the third quarter, outscoring the Inferno 18-6 in the third. When NCU did slow the game down, they still broke down AC's defense. Point guard
Kadija Conteh (London, UK, City of London Academy) was an expert at finding the holes in the defense to drive in the lane. And with the help of seniors
Naomi Hagstrom (Zimmerman, MN, Zimmerman High School) and
Emily DiGiorgio (Ironwood, MI, Luther L. Wright High School), the Rams had 52 points in the paint. NCU dominated the game from start to finish, picking up right where they left off last season.
Key Performers
- Naomi Hagstrom led the Rams with nine points. She also had two assists, two rebounds, and two steals.
- Mary Seegers had eight points with five steals and four rebounds.
- Leading the Rams with seven rebounds was Aubrey Robinson (Colorado Springs, CO, Sierra High School). She also had eight points and three steals.
