MORRIS, Minn. -- The North Central University (NCU) women's basketball team traveled to the home of University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) in search of their first ever win over the strong UMM program. The Rams made history beating the Cougars 70-66 in an exciting display of basketball in the
Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup.
Game Recap
The Rams looked fresh as they hopped of the two and half hour bus ride to the Cougars' home court. NCU matched the fast tempo of UMM and used it to their advantage. Guards
Kadija Conteh (London, UK, City of London Academy), Joelle Talso (Ramsey, MN, Spring Lake Park High School) and
Jocelyn Talso (Ramsey, MN, Spring Lake Park High School) were able to push the ball up the court right off the outlet pass to create early offense. They fed the ball into
Naomi Hagstrom (Zimmerman, MN, Zimmerman High School) as she cut across the key.
Hagstrom had a double-double, fueled by her offensive and defensive abilities with 26 points and 11 rebounds. The Rams maintained a decent lead through three quarters and almost had the game in the bag going into the fourth. However, the Cougars fought back in the last ten minutes adding a little more excitement.
Emily DiGiorgio (Ironwood, MI, Luther L. Wright High School) helped seal the game with a layup and a couple of defensive boards. NCU's lockdown defense in the last minute was the difference in the game.
The Cougars unfortunately ended the Rams season last year in the first round of the UMAC playoffs. NCU was ready for the rematch and to make program history. The Rams improve to 11-2 and 3-0 in the UMAC, putting them at number one in the conference.
Key Performers
- Naomi Hagstrom had a huge night for the Rams with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
