Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer falls in home opener to Yellowjackets

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The North Central University (NCU) women's soccer team took the field for the first time since the 2019 season on Wednesday afternoon. After a 30-minute lightning delay, the Rams faced the University of Wisconsin Superior-Superior (UWS) Yellowjackets in their home opener at Elliot Park Field. The first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup for each of the teams was a battle in the first half, where the Yellowjackets managed just a one to nothing lead, but tracked on four more in the second half to come away with the game by a final score of five to zero.

Game Vitals
  • The Rams held the Yellowjackets to one goal in the first half.
  • UWS had 16 shots on goal.
  • NCU recorded 11 saves on the afternoon.
Game Recap

In what turned out to be a great day for soccer, it was a stalemate through the first 10 minutes of action. Early on the ball was possessed mainly by UWS in their attacking third. The Rams held a strong central defensive shape, forcing the Yellowjackets to play on the outside. Led by center back Rachel Cribb (Lake Villa, IL, Lakes Community High School), this strategy kept goals from being scored on the inside. Another key component to NCU's defense was their keeper, Arien Fritts (Ham Lake, MN, Fritts Homeschool Academy). In her first performance as keeper, Fritts recorded 11 saves giving the Rams a much need strong, consistent presence in the back. After a one to zero half in favor of UWS, the Rams took more risks on the attack to try to get the ball in the back of the net. Hannah Grubbs (Mantua, OH, Newbury High School) had a total of three shots, with one on goal. Grubbs was helped on the attack by great passing and decision making from Kara Lewis (Mandeville, LA, Northlake Christian School) and Isabella Connell (Champlin, MN, Champlin Park High School). Although it wasn't the ending they wanted, the Rams played a tough 90 minutes and encouraged each other the whole way.
