MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- After their first two games getting postponed, the North Central University (NCU) men's soccer team was eager to get on the field. They got their wish with a nonconference matchup against Buena Vista University (BVU). The home opener was quite an exciting game as the Rams came back from a two goal deficit to beat the Beavers in overtime 3-2.
Game Vitals
- There were three total penalty kicks in the box all resulting in goals, one for the Rams and two for the Beavers.
- NCU had double the amount of shots as BVU and a third more corner kicks.
Game Recap
With a good core of returning players and some young talent, NCU looked fresh and composed as they took the pitch. Led by captain Tyler Johnson, the Rams played easily out of pressure in the back to push the ball forward. The game was quite physical resulting in two penalty kicks for the Beavers in the first half. BVU was able to net both making the score 2-0 at halftime. But the Rams were not finished yet. In the second half, NCU kept fighting back and got chance after chance at a goal. This intensity flustered the Beaver's back line.
Elliott Lebsack (Kearney, NE, Kearney High School) netted one in for the Rams in the 72nd minute giving the Rams the momentum they needed. Following
Lebsack was
Jerad Buse (Kearney, NE, Kearney High School) with a penalty kick goal in the 84th minute tying the game.
NCU was on the offensive from then on. At the end of regulation, the game was tied resulting in overtime. In the first ten minute period, both teams were scoreless but the Rams seems to have the advantage with their determination and skill. And the second overtime was when that determination showed up on the scoreboard. Capitan
Rodrigo De Mendoza (Panama City, Panama, Crossroads Christian Academy) played a perfect ball into
Lebsack who slotted it into the corner, much to the crowd's delight. There was an uproar from the sidelines and lots of celebration on the field. This NCU men's soccer team showed BVU how to finish a game.
