Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rams complete crazy comeback in low-scoring affair

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The North Central University women's basketball team took on the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) as the Cougars looked to get back in third place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Rams didn't let it get to OT this time as they complete a crazy comeback to beat UMM 50-47.

Game Recap

From the start, the defense from both teams applied intense pressure to the ball handlers, making it hard for both the Rams and the Cougars to get points on the board. The first quarter was fairly even, but the second quarter went to UMM. The offensive rebounding for NCU kept them in the game as they grabbed eight offensive boards in the first half. Rebounding overall was strong for the Rams out-rebounding the Cougars 50 to 38 in the whole game. Although NCU didn't score a ton in the second quarter, they were only down by six going into halftime.

The Rams started out the third quarter a little slow, but slowly gained momentum throughout the ten minutes and found their rhythm at the end. NCU used post Emily DiGiorgio (Ironwood, MI, Luther L. Wright High School) down low for multiple layups. Joelle Talso (Ramsey, MN, Spring Lake Park High School) ended the third quarter with a coast to coast drive giving loads of energy to the Rams. NCU caused chaos in the back court with their press defense and held strong with their half court defense making it next to impossible for UMM to score. In turn, the Rams stayed composed on offense and played the time to their advantage. Bethany Shield (Lincoln, NE, Lincoln Southwest High School) drilled a corner three with two minutes to go to give NCU a three point lead and the rest was history as the Rams sunk their free throws, beating the Cougars 50-47.

NCU continues their historic season with their 18th win of the season. The win also moves them to the three seed in the UMAC.

Key Performers
  • Emily DiGiorgio dominated the paint, getting a double double of 20 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Aubrey Robinson (Colorado Springs, CO, Sierra High School) nailed two three pointers as she scored 12 points and grabbed six boards.
  • Joelle Talso led all rebounders with 11.

Looking Ahead

The Rams go on the road next Friday to take on the University of Wisconsin Superior (UWS) for a 5:30 pm start. NCU beat UWS 78-57 earlier in the season.
