Rams Baseball Struggles on Defense, Leading to Two Losses on First Day of Spring Break Trip in Florida

Fort Meyers, FL -- North Central University's (NCU) Baseball team struggled after a long day of travel to start their spring break trip to Florida. Both games would end up in blow out losses that the Rams will look to bounce back from later in the trip. Game one was against the Alvernia Golden Wolves and game two was against the Muskigum Fighting Muskies.

Game One:

The Rams would start the game with Jon Roberts on the mound. The first inning would breeze by with both teams going scoreless, but that would change to start the second. Multiple hits and two key errors by the Ram's defense would allow four runs to score and the Golden Wolves wouldn't look back from there. Four more runs for Alvernia would boost their lead to eight by the end of the third inning. The defense for the Blue and Gold would tighten up and they wouldn't allow another run until the sixth inning. During the fifth inning, Nate Boyer would score on a wild pitch and give them their first run of the game. A home run in the top of the sixth would bring the lead back to eight and NCU would finish the inning only giving up one run. In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Michael Escalante would start off the inning with a double. Julian Encinas would follow that up with an RBI single to cut the lead. Ram's pitching and defense would continue to struggle, giving up six more runs and ending the game at 15-2 in favor of Alvernia.

Game Two:

Two-way player, Daniel Montana, would start on the mound for game two and the Rams would continue to struggle on the defensive side of the ball. The Fighting Muskies would score eight runs to end the first. The Blue and Gold would rally the defense together for an inning until it eventually collapsed in the third inning. four more runs would extend the big lead to twelve for Muskingum. More of the same in the fourth creating a bigger lead for the Fighting Muskies. North Central would have some signs of life in the fifth after getting hit by a pitch for Christian Rodriguez, and an RBI double from freshman Jack Stoye. The batting would continue to improve in the sixth inning as Roberts would knock in Kyle Huerth. One more run would be scored in the sixth, but Muskingum would pile on more runs, handing NCU the 27-3 loss.

Key Performers:
  • Julian Encinas (Tucson, AZ) with his fourth hit of the year and second RBI of the season.
  • Jack Stoye (Johnston, IA) with a double and an RBI.
