Track & Field Competes at the Jack Johnson Classic; Horton Shines in Opening Meet

Minneapolis, MN -- The North Central University (NCU) men's and women's track and field teams kicked off their 2025 indoor season earlier today. The Rams competed at the Jack Johnson Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota. The meet was highlighted by freshman Joyce Horton setting a pair of program records in the women's 60-meter hurdles and high jump and finishing top ten in all three of her events.

Throws:

On the women's side, freshman Carolyn Hanisch threw 8.13m in the shot put.

In the men's shot put, freshman Colton Hagen took 20th place with a throw of 8.82m. Andre Muteba took 18th in the weight throw with a mark of 9.77m.

Jumps:

Freshman Joyce Horton started her day off strong, setting a new school record in the high jump with a jump of 1.45m (3rd in UMAC), placing 8th place. Horton also placed 6th overall in the triple jump with a mark of 10.00 meters (3rd in UMAC). Fellow freshman, Lily Ciske was right behind her with a jump of 9.61m (4th in UMAC). 

Men's jumps were highlighted by junior Tom Cao setting a new program record in the men's pole vault with a height of 3.51m (9th in UMAC). In the high jump, freshman Hunter Harris took 5th place with a mark of 1.85m (2nd in UMAC). Sophomore Zak Ruhland jumped 5.31m in the men's long jump, good for 12th overall.

Sprints:

In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Joyce Horton set yet another program record with a time of 10.06 seconds (4th in UMAC). Freshman Jazzmin Celis led the Rams in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.74 seconds (5th in UMAC) and 200-meter dash with a time of 29.18 seconds (4th in UMAC).

Junior Matthew Holstad set a new personal best in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 59.01 seconds. In the 60-meter sprint, Hunter Harris led all Rams with a time of 7.50 seconds. 

Distance:

In the women's 800-meter race, Jessica Redman and Avah Kraushaar finished back-to-back with times of 2:44.26 and 2:51.79, respectively.

In the men's 800m, freshman Colton Hagen took 6th place with a time of 2:12.37 (8th in UMAC). Junior captain Garrett Converse set a new personal best in the mile with a time of 4:48.31.

Relays:

The men's 4x400 meter relay team comprised of David Bjorge, Zak Ruhland, Tom Cao, and Isaiah Hernandez started the year off with a time of 3:57.60. 


Looking ahead:

The track and field teams compete next weekend at the St. Olaf Invite in Northfield, MN on Saturday, January 27th.
