Minneapolis, MN -- North Central University (NCU) Athletics is ecstatic to announce the hiring of
Mel Anderson as the next head coach of the Rams' cross country and track & field programs. Anderson brings more than three decades of coaching, athletic administration, and community leadership experience to North Central, highlighted by the development of thousands of student-athletes, the founding of one of Minnesota's premier youth track organizations, and a lifelong commitment to mentorship through athletics. He assumes his new role immediately.
Anderson arrives at North Central following more than 31 years of coaching and athletic leadership across the youth, high school, collegiate, and professional development levels. Since 1999, he has served as Founder and Executive Director of
Youth & Families Determined To Succeed (YFDS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing wellness support services to enhance the impact and develop better outcomes for youth struggling with mental health and health-related issues associated with obesity. As part of YFDS, Anderson also founded and continues to lead
Track Minnesota Elite, one of the state's premier youth track and field AAU organizations. A lifelong entrepreneur and self-starter, Anderson also founded
Maximum Impact Training, an athletic performance company that has worked with hundreds of athletes ranging from youth competitors to collegiate and professional athletes through individualized development and injury prevention. He has also spent a combined 11 seasons coaching high school track and field at The Blake School, including 3 years as head coach, where he guided the program to consecutive conference championships following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. His coaching résumé also includes decades of football coaching experience throughout Minnesota, further demonstrating his passion for developing young people through athletics.
Throughout his coaching career, Anderson has helped more than 400 student-athletes continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level across NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, HBCU, and Ivy League institutions in multiple sports. Several athletes have advanced to professional and international competition, including his son Isaac Anderson, who competed professionally with the Washington Commanders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. His daughters, Taylor and Elise Anderson, also achieved elite success, with Taylor qualifying for two U.S. Olympic Trials, a World Championship Trial, and representing Team USA at the Pan American Championships, while Elise competed professionally as a sprinter. Anderson says his greatest accomplishment, however, has been "watching hundreds of former athletes graduate from college, build successful careers, raise families, and give back to their communities."
One of the cornerstones of Anderson's coaching career has been the continued growth of Track Minnesota Elite, a flagship youth development program operating under Youth & Families Determined To Succeed (YFDS). Since founding the organization in 1999, the program has served more than 5,000 young athletes while hosting over 50 championship-level meets and establishing itself as one of Minnesota's premier youth track organizations. Today, the club serves nearly 100 athletes annually and has produced more than 42 AAU National Champions, 3 Nike National Champions, multiple Team USA representatives, a U20 World Champion, and more than 10 AAU All-Americans each season. Built around a family atmosphere, Track Minnesota Elite emphasizes leadership, confidence, resilience, emotional wellness, college readiness, and athletic excellence. Anderson will continue serving as Founder of the organization while leading North Central's cross country and track and field programs.
"What excites me most about NCU is the opportunity to build a program that will have a lasting impact for decades to come," said Anderson. "I want to establish a strong foundation built on faith, excellence, and relationships while providing Division III student-athletes with a Division I level coaching experience and development model. As I begin my 32nd year of coaching, North Central represents the perfect opportunity to invest everything I've learned into building a championship-caliber program. My vision is to build a nationally respected cross country and track & field program known for excellence on the track, in the classroom, and in the community while helping our student-athletes grow as leaders, followers of Christ, and successful young adults."
Anderson's coaching philosophy is rooted in building complete student-athletes. He believes success extends far beyond times, distances, and championships, emphasizing professionalism, accountability, servant leadership, and strong relationships. Drawing upon decades of experience mentoring athletes of every ability level, Anderson strives to provide individualized development while preparing student-athletes for success both during and after their collegiate careers.
Before launching his coaching career, Anderson was an accomplished athlete in his own right. A graduate of Steel Valley High School near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he helped lead his football team to a perfect 13-0 record and Pennsylvania State Championship, while also competing on a state championship track and field team and earning High School All-American honors. He continued his career at the University of Minnesota from 1983-86, starring as a wide receiver and return specialist. During his collegiate career, Anderson set school records for the longest touchdown reception (89 yards), career kickoff return average, and career kickoff return yards, while still ranking second in program history in career kickoff return yards. Following college, Anderson fulfilled a lifelong dream by joining his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers, where he shared the field with Hall of Famer John Stallworth. Among his favorite playing memories are returning a kickoff for a touchdown against Northwestern to help earn a bowl berth and catching the opening touchdown in Minnesota's historic upset of No. 2-ranked Michigan. Anderson credits legendary coaches Lou Holtz, Chuck Knoll, Rick Dunmire, and Billy Ford for shaping the leadership philosophy he carries into coaching today.
Beyond athletics, Anderson has dedicated much of his life to serving young people and families throughout Minnesota. In 1999, he founded Youth & Families Determined To Succeed (YFDS), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide wellness support services to enhance the impact and develop better outcomes for youth struggling with mental health and health-related issues associated with obesity. Over the past 27 years, the organization has positively impacted more than 5,000 youth and families, with approximately 90 percent of its long-term participants going on to attend and graduate from college. Today, YFDS continues expanding its partnerships with healthcare providers and community organizations to address youth mental health, obesity, and chronic health conditions through whole-person wellness programming. Anderson plans to continue serving as Founder and Executive Director while exploring opportunities for collaboration between North Central University and YFDS to further serve both students and the surrounding community.
Anderson attended the University of Minnesota, where he pursued Business Administration before beginning his professional football career. He also holds certifications as a National Registry of Professional Golf Instructors member, USGTF Certified Instructor, and PGA Associate. Completing his bachelor's degree remains one of Anderson's personal goals as he begins this next chapter at North Central.
Mel currently resides in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, with his wife, Lisa. Together, they have three children named Isaac (38), Taylor (31), and Elise (30), all of whom have enjoyed successful athletic careers. Outside of coaching, Anderson enjoys traveling, mentoring young people, and developing community programs that create opportunities for future generations. A lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan and proud supporter of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, he also considers NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr. his favorite athlete, citing Johnson's leadership and impact beyond sports as an inspiration.
Welcome to North Central, Coach Anderson!
