MANKATO, Minn. -- Apart of another
Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) crossover tournament, the North Central University (NCU) softball team took the field against the University of Northwestern (UNW). The Rams played a tough game against the number two ranked Eagles and fell 12-8. NCU was scheduled to play another game that was rained out.
Game Recap
The first inning was a stand still as both team reached three outs very quickly. The second inning saw much more action as a couple Rams made it on base. The Eagles also made it on base and managed to bring a runner in. UNW used this momentum to swiftly shut down NCU in the third inning and score four more runs of their own. The Rams gritted their teeth and dug deep to bounce back in a major way in the fourth inning. This comeback started as NCU filled up the bases so that
Hosanna Gattle (Merrit Island, FL) could score off a walk. This happened twice more allowing
Nichelle Henderson (Brooklyn Park, MN, Park Center High School) and
Isabella Gallardo (Austin, TX) to cross home plate. Still taking advantage of the Eagle's pitcher,
Kali Kahalekomo (Muncie, IN) also scored, this time off a wild pitch. The last two runs of the inning also came off of walks as
Brooke McGlinchey (Belle Plaine, MN) and
Katelynn Fox (Hedesville, WV) scored. These six runs put the Rams in lead 6-5.
However, in the bottom of the same inning, UNW did one better and scored seven runs to gain the lead 12-6. The fifth inning was a draw at 0-0. NCU had the beginnings of a comeback with a well-played sixth inning. To start,
Delaney Riddle (Lake Stevens, WA) singled up the middle to bring in
Emma Cochran (Chewelah, WA). Then,
Selma Carrasco (El Paso, TX, Mountain View High School) scored off a hit from
Gattle. This put two runs on the board for the Rams as they quickly secured three outs on the Eagles in the bottom of the sixth. UNW didn't let NCU much closer in the score as they themselves snagged three quick outs in the final inning to win the game 12-8.
Currently, the Rams sit at 12-26 and 3-16 in the conference will their final game of the season tomorrow.Â
